Some questions

Hi All,

I have just discovered kayak fishing a couple of weeks ago and thinking of giving it a try.

But, first question, I am a big guy, 6 foot and 105 kg. Would I be comfortable in the kayak?

Also, I live in SE suburbs of Melbourne and usually fish around Black Rock, Mordialloc area. Would i be able to do kayak fishing in the bay?

And last, where can I hire a kayak in Melbourne, preferebly somewhere close to me so that I can at least give it a go?

Many thanks, tight lines...

Re: Some questions

Fishcrazy,
Welcome to the forum.
There are quite a few of us in Melbourne that fish those same area’s with some good success.
Check out the “Fishing Trips” section for previous reports, pictures and future trips.
As for your height & weight, it’s almost the same as me and I’ve been out for 7 ½ hours on one trip (the fish were really on). I can’t say I was comfortable the whole time but I could still walk the next day. Make sure you get a good seat that you feel comfortable on. I suggest one with a bum pad and back support.
The best place to hire a kayak in the area is Capacity Sports on Bay Rd. They have all sorts of kayaks and you can hire them for the whole weekend. If you buy one, they take the hire price off the sale price.
I hope that helps and I look forward to going for a fish with you when you get set up.

Hi Fishcrazy,

Yes, Welcome emoticon

At 6'/105kg you will be fine in all of the kayaks used for fishing from Perception, Ocean Kayaks, Cobra, Hobie, Malibu or Viking.

If you just want to give it a try you don't necessarily need to hire a fishing kayak if you cannot find one. Any sit-on-top suitable for your height & weight will work to a reasonable degree just for a weekend trial.

Re: Some questions

Guys, emoticon

I went to Capacity Sports on Bay Rd and checked some kayaks. They were really helpful. They showed me an Ocean fishing kayak, and some outfit. Now I have a proper idea what I need to do.

Cannot wait for a good weather to hire a kayak and try.

Thanks for the advice.

Regards,

H.

Re: Some questions

You can test kayaks for free down at Jetty Rd in Sandringham. I tested a couple of different kayaks from there. Its a really good spot because he is right on the water, so we took 2 different yaks down to the waters edge and just kept swapping.

I believe the German fella who owned it while I was down there has sold the business, but Im sure its still up and running.

Re: Some questions

Fishcrazy,

Look forward to catching up for a fish, i too cannot wait for warmer weather to hit the ocean and the snapper in November. Your height and weight shouldn't be a problem so long as you have a stable yak just ensure there lots of storage and room to strap a container as a fish holder should you go that way. A nice comfortable seat and back rest is also a must as we generally fish for 4-5 hours. What ever you buy you will find yourself modyfing it to your liking its kind of an addiction.
