Re: A few questions before I jump in the deep end...
Hi Jacko
I was wondering who this Zaphod66 chap was who joined but hadn't made any posts.
Please take the time to create a signature (you can just use your username if you don't want to use your real name) & as part of your signature mention the kayak you use. It helps make your posts feel a lot more 'personal' & lets everyone know what you paddle.
Please also include your location (just a general one, not your full street address) into your profile so we can all see where each other is from.
Now all we need to do is get your Tempo to you & wait for the fishing reports & pics.

Phil.

Re: A few questions before I jump in the deep end...
Another question while I think of it Phil. The plan at the moment is to buy two kayaks. Therefore I would need a set of roof racks and some fold-a-poles.
Is there any chance that I could fit this on to my toyota corrolla sedan?? (fingers crossed that people aren't laughing at this thought)
Is there someway I can measure up my car to check?

Don't worry about measuring it. With folda-poles you'll have no problem.
I use them on my Camry and there's heaps of room.

Nobody is laughing Garfish, we have all been there! I can happily fit two yaks on top of my Laser sedan, and I have even seen this done on a Mazda 121!
Definiely get them fitted by a pro though.

Re: A few questions before I jump in the deep end...
Hi Garfish,
There's not a lot of measurments you'll need to take and you should be fine but there are some important things you should check:
1).. Will the combined weight of the 2 kayaks be able to be carried on the roof of your Corolla ? You should be O.K. but it pays to check your owners handbook for the max. allowable limit & make sure it's more than the pair of kayaks. If in doubt, speak to a decent roofrack supplier.
2).. The width of the cross bars will need to be sufficient to fit both kayaks on edge + the thickness of the fold-a-pole post (about 75mm) + at least 100mm on each side to allow for the tiedown straps. The smaller roof of the Corolla may mean you need to use cross bars that extend outwards past the mounts, like this
rather than the ones that finish at the mounts, like this
3).. Due to the curved nature of the kayaks when on-edge you can't space the crossbars too far apart otherwide the portion of the hull in between them may touch your roof. Your car, being shorter suits this anyway but I'd suggest you get cross bars that sit as high as possible off the roof to avoid any potintial problems.
Two last things...
Having handles on the sides of your kayaks realy makes them easy to load onto the roof on edge so if the kayaks you get don't have them I'd suggest you get some fitted.
As Cormorant says get the racks fitted by a pro but the fold-a-poles can be fitted by you as long as you have the right hand tools. Use quality racks from people like ROLA, Rhino etc. & you won't have any dramas.

Re: A few questions before I jump in the deep end...
Garfish i jumped into the deep end and bought a Viking Espri and have never looked back. Paddling technique is very easy and after an hour your home and hosed with regard to stability of your yak. Its pays to take it out in warm weather and tip it and learnt to get back on. I have DVD to loan you if we ever catch up for a fish once you have bought a yak. Little running cost, launch anywhere, light weight, no motor to service and a stable fishing platform what more could you want???
Try different models and look for one that is both stable and quick. Look for storage options I like the yak that have wells rather hatches as its more accesible in my opinion. although a hatch for the water proof bag is a must.
Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Re: A few questions before I jump in the deep end...
Maybe you have purchased your kayak already, but i used to have a "Feel Free" SOT kayak which I rather liked, and the prices are good to. The "Nomad" is a single seater, and claim to be one of the fastest SOT available, I dont know for sure, but I used to have the "Gemini" 2 seat version, and used to paddle it around in the surf and impoundments ok. A few of the other lads here I have "yakked" with and it kept up with the "Swing Brigade" no problems at all, which attaracted a few surprised comments. For around $600 for the single version, I think that they are a great price, they have many extras available for them too. At the end of the day though, there is just too many kayaks, and I want them all. I wish you good luck with your buying, and laugh in good humour because I know that this wont be your last kayak- enjoy
