HOLY CRAP, BATMAN!
Yeah, I know, I've been away for a while (not that I was missed...lol). I just had to share this.....
In 1968 I saw the Batmobile with my own eyes for the very first time at an auto show in Grand Rapids. At the time it was roped off and hands off. i remember there was a contest and the winner got to ride in the Batmobile! What a dream. I was 10 and couldn't even imagine being able to just touch the most sacred of all cars!
40 years later I'm driving down Apple Ave. here in Muskegon and I passed by a Classic Car lot which is approximately 2 miles from my house.
I stopped there a couple of times because the 80s Batmobile was in the showroom. Every time that I went there the place was closed.
Then this past Saturday I was driving by and caught a glimpse of...no, it couldn't be...I nearly drove off the road spinning my head around while gripping the steering wheel. Other cars were obstructing my view so I had to stare into my rear view mirror and saw the fins.
I was on my way to picking up my younger Brother and as soon as I got there I told him we had to gat back to that lot. We are both die-hard Batfans and, while I am a fan of all aspects of Batman, it is all because of the TV series and that will always be my favorite version of Batman.
On the way back I was hoping that it wasn't a mirage and that it would still be there. I was in such a rush to get there that we blew right by it and I had to go back.
We appraoched and THERE IT WAS!
I quickly opened the trunk to get my camera out not even taking time to close the trunk. I took a pic from the front and the owner came out.
I thought for sure that he was going to tell us to scoot but the guy was VERY cool. Not only did he let me take as many pictures as I wanted but he gave us a rare tour of his garages and lots which had many star cars, bikes, prototypes, props, etc.
I took a few pix (my memory card was almost full) but my main interest was the Batmobile. I did, of course, take pix of the newer version, too.
Then I dared ask....'Could I possibly sit in the Batmobile?'
He told me that at shows he usually asks for a $10 donation which he gives to charity (I don't remember if it was the "Make A Wish Foundation" or "Children's Miracle Network"). I was strapped for cash but only briefly hesitated. It was a good cause (mine and charity's).
It was a struggle wedging my big fat ass into Adam West's seat but we pried me in. He said that I could take as many pictues as I wanted so I gave the camera to my Neice, Beth, and had her take one from the front, side and back.
Then the owner told my Brother and his kids to stand by it and he shot another photo for me. Too cool.
If it works, one of the pix is here, the rest are in my MySpace photo album.
Ironically the Batmobile was sitting out because he had just come back from a car show. It turns out that it has been sitting in his place for years!!!!!!
Oh, and he did confirm that this car was actually used in the series.
