What was your very 1st comic book you remember reading?

My 1st comic book was a very early issue of Peter Parker Spectacular Spiderman. I think it was # 8 or 10, the villain on the cover was the Vulture. This was in the mid-70's. I became a hardcore comic book collector at that point. I even remember the day I bought it I walked into the drug store across the street from my dad's office. As soon as you walk in the door there was one of those "spinning comic book wire-racks" & for some reason this one comic caught my eye. To this day I still love the sound of those old racks, the squeeking sound it makes. Yes, kinda weird, but sometimes a small sound can trigger memories. I now have one of those old racks in my spare office, in the corner. Every now & then I give it a small spin, squeek, squeek....aaaahhhhh. It makes me feel all warm & fuzzy inside.

Re: What was your very 1st comic book you remember reading?

The first comic I remember reading was, in fact, a Batman comic: Batman #220 "This Murder Has Been...Pre-Recorded." I was six years old and my only knowledge of Batman was the t.v. show. By this time, the comic had taken a 180 degree turn and was much more adult. The cover featured Batman running and entering a phone booth, getting an ominous message, and then the phone booth blows up! The story inside was like a taut crime thriller reminiscent of the t.v. cop shows of the day. My little six-year-old brain was completely turned around. I realized there was a whole lot more to Batman than the Bat-tusi and Holy Whatever, Batman!

The next issue I talked my Dad into buying me was Batman #227 - The Demon of Gothos Mansion. The cover looks like a cross between really early Batman comics and a Hammer Horror movie poster. This story played up Batman's dark, gothic image, which was yet another epiphany for me. The back-up story was a solo Robin when **** Grayson was off at college. Suddenly, I saw the t.v. show as some silly parody while the comics were the real deal. I liked both, but I took the comics more seriously. Those first two comics formed my basic concept of what Batman was to me, and I've spent the rest of my life hoping the movies will live up to that image. The last one came close.

Thanks for sharing your story Polyvinylman!

Here's some pix of the comics you were talkin' about. Looks like you got in right around the time Neal Adams was the main artist. I seriously love his work & it's about the best Batman there ever was.....lucky!

Yep, those are the ones! Really nice scans. I got chills looking at the second one. I remember getting in the car after my Dad and I left the drug store (with the good ol' spinner rack), and I just studied that cover for the longest time. It was so eerie.

I feel fortunate that I started reading Batman during the Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams period. The following year, they did the Ras Al Ghul trilogy. Can't get much better than that.

My first comic book was given to me by my Uncle, out of his box of comics, Batman #189. That cover still remains one of my favorites.

I'm pretty sure it was a Harvey title. I used to read the heck outta Casper, Richie Rich, Hot Stuff etc. It just as easily could have been an Archie title.

Re: What was your very 1st comic book you remember reading?

Thinking this over last night, it seems that at the age of 5 I went directly from fables and fairy stories to Uncanny Tales and other wierd comic books. Perhaps that would explain a few things about my state of mind.

I used to love Tales of Suspense and Amazing Tales and I was a big fan of The Fantastic Four and Spiderman.
My favourite and the first I can remember reading was Uncanny Tales.

The first Batman I can remember was somewhere around issue #230 when Robin was The Teen Wonder.

Best of all was I never had to pay for them because my Mother collected stuff to sell for charity and every few months someone would just leave a huge box full of comics outside our door. emoticon

My first comic was Catwoman #29. Well, it probably wasn't my first, but it's the first one that counts!! I'm 19years old that's why it's so recent.
