Batman Confidential

What's everybody's opinion on this particular new title?

I for one am enjoying so far, except for the scene in #2 where Batman fights that big robot IN BROAD DAYLIGHT! I'm not a fan of Batman being out and about in the day. He's a creature of the night. He hides in shadow. He's a detective. And he's there to scare the pants off of criminals.

He's not there to play a Superman-like, public protector of Gotham, completely exposed to the general public. At least not in his early career (which is where this title takes place.) At this point in his career he should still be establishing himself to the criminal community as a raith. A living legend. A myth. A scary monster that'll kick your arse if you turn to crime. It shouldn't be until much much later in his careef that he becomes known to the general public and recognized as a protector of Gotham City.

I know i ranted for a bit there, but despite that scene, i truely am enjoying this book. Especially pinning him up against Luthor. I like it when writers don't restrict themselves to just the hero's rogue's gallery. I like it when villains cross over and are a threat to more than just one hero.

A solid start, and Diggle's one of my favorite writers, so I'm looking forward to where this is going. Although I'd rather see Bruce vs Lex than Batman vs Lex. The art is horrible though! I've never been a Portacio fan, and this is some of his sloppiest work to date.

Yeah, I was a bit worried when I saw the news that Whilce was going to be doing the art. I knew I probably wouldn't like it, but I had no idea how bad he was going to be at actually drawing the cowl, it's atrocious. But then as I said, I've never been a Portacio fan. The first of his work I can remember seeing was on X-Factor, and I've just never liked it.

That's great if you're enjoying it though! God I wish I did, a great writer and a great artist would suit me better than a great writer and bad artist do. It doesn't ruin the book for me, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I could be.

I hear you man. I'm the same way. If i don't enjoy the artwork, it ruins the whole book for me. So even dispite a good story, i can't enjoy it.

Example: I don't know if you're a marvel fan at all, (i'm mainly a Marvel guy) but their current GHOST RIDER book has the worst art i've ever seen. And even though the story so far is pretty cool, i stopped buying the book because i just wanna scoop my eyes out with a spoon when i look at the art on the page.

I've always had weird taste in the art though. I love the polished art of Jim Lee, but i also love the rather simple/older aproach of Tim Sale. I love the art on BATMAN CONFIDENTIAL, but i'm really strongly dissliking the current art on BATMAN.

I'm just extremely picky and particular.

But you still buy it. Why? Because of the character.

Actually, i still buy it because i know the artist is temporary, and a replacement is coming soon. Plus i don't want to be out of the loop continuity wise. But if it wasn't a book that i regularly buy, i wouldn't continue buying it. Like the current Ghost Rider for example. The current Blade is another example of a good story that could've been much better with a great artist. Its art is pretty bad so i stopped buying it until they get a new artist on the book.

I actually really dig Richard Corben's art usually, but I must agree his Ghost Rider guest pencils have been terrible.

I'm pretty much all over the place, I read almost every Marvel and DC title (I work part time in a comic shop) and alot of indie stuff.

Yeah, as I stated in the Grotesk thread, Mandrake's an acquired taste, but I got used to his art on the fantastic Spectre series he and Ostrander did for years. I've always wanted to see those two on a Batman book.

BBD, I'll be buying Batman for the rest of my life, regardless of the creative team. Hell, I've made it through some tough times with Batsy (Knightfall anyone?) and never thought about dropping any of his titles. If Batman's in a comic, I'll buy it, even if it's just a guest apperance.

Basically re-emphasizing my point! emoticon

Re: Batman Confidential

hahah. You're gonna be a tough cookie for me, aren't you?

Lets put it this way: If it wasn't Batman, and it had crappy art, i wouldn't be reading it. The Bat demands my attention at all times, regardless of artist. But otherwise, if the art is bad, i'm not reading, regardless of how good the story is. The bad art just takes me out of the story and makes it impossible for me to enjoy the book.

So... there. Batman's the exception... because he's batman.
