Batman's Makeover
Hey everybody. Boy, i sure feel gabby today.
Anyway, what's your thoughts on the new direction DC's taking with Batman, post Infinite Crisis?
They've aparrantly done away with "A-Hole Batman" (Although i think that's an unfair nick-name. i prefer "Unstable-Batman") and reverted him to what many older readers remember him as from the 70's and early 80's (Pre-The Dark Knight Returns).
I actually very much enjoyed "unstable-Batman." I'm one who believe's you have to be a bit bonkers to dress up as a bat every night and go out hunting down criminals, hiding in shadows, and participating in other general acts of ass-kickery. But i guess i can kind of see the appeal of a more Heroic adaptation of the Batman character.
I just sometimes feel like Batman should always be the Oddball of the DC Universe. He doesn't have super powers. He shouldn't be out there for the sake of being an hero. And he should almost never get much public credit for what he does. He should, in my opinion, do what he does because of his traumatic childhood, and the continuing drama in his life. Jason Todd's death, Barbara Gordon's paralisis, etc. And i believe all those catalyst for what he does would have a large effect on his mental health and make him a little bitter and hard to deal with.
I will say this though: I'm very happy to see Bruce Wayne becoming a useful character again. He's been missing a lot for a while...
Penny for your thoughts.

Re: Batman's Makeover
I agree and disagree with some of your points. I happen to like the new direction, he seems more human this way.
I will agree that it's nice to see Bruce Wayne being used more though. That's one of the great things about Superman, when written correctly both Supes and Clark are interesting characters.

Re: Batman's Makeover
I prefer him to be doing what he's doing for the love of it and not just because of a bitter obsession with the death of his parents.
I am concerned about Tim Drake and The Joker being dead one minute and resurrected the next, that's driving ME insane.

Re: Batman's Makeover
To my knowledge, the Joker's never been killed, other than in The Dark Knight Returns, which doesn't count as "in continuity.'
If i'm wrong about this, please, somebody correct me. (And no, he did not die in that recent issue of Batman where he was shot in the face.)

Re: Batman's Makeover
I like the new Batman, or old Batman depending on how you look at it. It does remind you of the 70's/80's Batman. I guess thats why im really liking the newer stories and characterizations now because thats what I grew up reading.
The direction they were taking him in was getting rather irritating. I was really not liking him as a character, and that should never be.lol

Nope Joker's alive and well in continuity, as is Tim Drake.

Re: Batman's Makeover
I supose it depends on which comics you count as being in continuity.
Most recently he was killed by Jason Todd in War Games only to come back and get shot in the face and is going to go through it all again in the next few months.

Re: Batman's Makeover
I don't remember him dieing in War Games. I remember he was beaten to a pulp... but i always assumed he survived. I don't remember "The Joker is Dead" anywhere in the book...
again... i forget things... so correct me if i'm wrong...
actually... maybe i'll just go dig up that issue...

Yeah, I don't remember that either. I remember when **** beat him to death in the horrible "Last Laugh" storyline that ran through every DC book a few years ago, but I dont remember anything from War Games. Didn't "War Games" happen before the "Return of the Red Hood" story? I'll have to look it up also.

Batman's Makeover
Batman’s back to basics characterization has been great. I’ve especially enjoyed the friendlier interaction between Bruce and the "boys" and hope to see more "Dynamic Duo" adventures soon. Also, the T-Rex, Joker card and large penny are all back in the Batcave (see Batman #657)—awesome!
My only complaint is that while the Bat-writers have reinforced the importance of the Bat-family, Tim’s adoption has been rushed over. I recognize that the actual signing of the adoption papers probably occurred during 52’s Bat-hiatus but I need a key issue or a more in-depth story arc! This may be a minor thing for most but I’ve been following Tim Drake since the beginning—A Lonely Place of Dying—and would have enjoyed being a part of this turning point as a reader as opposed to just hearing about it in the pages of Robin.
