It was another late night, and Charlie sat at his desk. Thumbing through the latest stats for Don to read through, Charlie felt for the first time the pressure of work and well…work. He felt fulfilled knowing he was helping Don, but teaching doubled his stress.

Cross referencing his algorithms with the latest revisions and new material for Don’s case, Charlie realized he had not finished writing up finals for his first year students. Damn it! Why did I agree to take that freshman class? Because it gave you afternoons off, afternoons where you’d just “accidentally” pass Larry’s office to find Amita, and ask her out for lunch.

“Charlie?” Amita chimed as she peeked into his office, “I was sent to retrieve you,” she mentioned casually while holding her laptop under on arm, and her external hard drive in the other.

“Is that all of it?” Charlie stared at her with a sigh of relief,

“Yes, and if we make it out before this storm gets worse, I’ll worry less about getting struck by lightening when we get outside.” The spring shower which was pretty tame in February became tumultuous and forcefully in a matter of hours.

Charlie grinned, and scoffed, “You know the probability of getting struck by lighting outside?”

“Yes, I do, as a matter of fact. But that’s not what I’m worried about—“

Darkness. The sound of lightbulbs crackling in the aftermath of a blackout silenced them until a sudden CRASH.

“Shhit!” Amita’s voice cried out, and Charlie felt himself rushing towards the sound of her voice.

“Are you okay? Amita?” Charlie asked, his arms tracing the contours of the walls behind him for a sense of place.

“Yeah, just…it slipped…from under my arm.” Amita’s voice trembled slightly.

“No…” Charlie’s voice whispered.

“My hard drive…don’t worry, I have the final results for you, I just…” Amita let herself crumple to the floor beneath her. She had lost it, her work with Larry, the work she spent three weeks on, the work, she didn’t have to lose if she had just left earlier instead of working overtime at the school.

“Are you okay?” She felt a hand on her back, it was Charlie, and she felt calm. He always had a solution, he had a way of resolving things that amazed her; it was what made her want to stay longer at Cal Sci, but she would never admit it aloud.

“Yeah…no…listen, let’s just find our way out of here, okay?” She propped herself against Charlie, and they rose together.

“Okay. We’re in the hallway, the exist is to your left. We just have to keep going towards this corridor, and we’re fine.” He rested his arm around her waist, and it felt natural, and unexpected.
Amita noticed right away, but kept silent, her heart beating and counting down the seconds before he let his grip go…but he didn’t.

“Thank you, Charlie.” She said quietly, and she in the darkness she closed her eyes and let herself just relax with the nearness of him.

“Amita…” his voice drifted, and Charlie couldn’t believe his impulses but in the dark, their arms wrapped around one another, walking blindly, it made him feel daring as his hand reached for hers, and interlocked tightly.

Cindy Lawmen, the third grade, she was a cute brunette with buck-teeth, no matter how much the other kids laughed at him and his use of algebraic theories, Cindy ignored it. She liked him, and during recess she held his hand for a whole five minutes. The memory of it made Charlie nervous, and slowly breaks a sweat as Amita squeezed back, and let out a sigh.

“Um, Charlie? Where are we going now?” Amita turned his attention the present, without realizing sooner, he had taken a turn, but whether they were lost or not, Amita liked the pseudo-adventure.

“I-Ugh, Ah, here’s the door. See, no problem.” The minute they both walked in and heard the door slam shut, it was too late.

“Let me guess, this isn’t the way out.” Amita said softly as she stumbled over some debris on the ground.

“Bleach.” Charlie announced suddenly, “there’s a faint smell of bleach in here, which would mean..”

Amita finally let out a laugh, “the broom closet? We’re in janitor Phil’s broom closet? The secret freshmen make-out spot.”

“People make out in here?”
