Code of Canon Law

CODE OF CANON LAW. The new Code, issued by Pope John Paul II in 1983, contains seven "books" of unequal length. They deal in sequence with General Norms, People of God, Teaching Office of the Church, Office Sanctifying in the Church, Temporal Goods of the Church, Sanctions in the Church, and Processes. The Books are divided into Parts, Titles, Chapters, Articles, and finally Canons, of which there are 1752, compared with 2414 canons in the former Code of 1918. As explained by the Pope when promulgating the present Code, it shows certain elements which characterize the true and genuine image of the Church, namely as 1) the People of God, 2) with a hierarchical authority as service, 3) to form a communion between particular churches and the universal Church, and between papal primacy and episcopal collegiality, 4) whose members share in the threefold priestly, prophetic, and kingly office of Christ, 5) all of whom, especially the laity, have certain rights and duties, 6) in a Church which is committed to ecumenism.

Although only the Latin text is official, the new Code is available in vernacular translations approved by the Holy See.
