The Book of Henoch (Ethiopic)/Book of Enoch

quote:

The Book of Henoch (Ethiopic)

The antediluvian patriarch Henoch according to Genesis "walked with God and was seen no more, because God took him". This walking with God was naturally understood to refer to special revelations made to the patriarch, and this, together with the mystery surrounding his departure from the world, made Henoch's name an apt one for the purposes of apocalyptic writers. In consequence there arose a literature attributed to him.

You may have heard New Age claims of the "Lost books of the Bible" saying they back up New Age teachings. The Book of Enoch is one of the so called "Lost Books". They weren't lost, they purposely were not included.

Some Christian denominations reject reincarnation mainly because they consider the theory to challenge a basic tenet of their interpretation of Christianity. Many churches do not directly address the issue and leave the matter open to individual interpretation due to the few biblical references which survived the purging of texts considered to be heretical in the founding years of Christianity as a church.

There are actual, not even sure what to call them now, churches that do believe in reincarnation, mediums and the like. Maybe not all of those at the same time but at least mediums... that I know for a fact because in those dabbling days of mine I almost went to one. The pastor said his father did automatic writing and would channel 'spirits' and they'd have different speakers come up. I was still seeking God but trying to hold on to new age junk and had it not been so far away I would have started attending there. That probably would've confused life even more for me, I seem to have a knack of doing that, or at least I did.

## FWIW, the Books of Enoch aren't occultic. There are three of them - 1 Enoch (AKA Ethiopic Enoch) is the one quoted in Jude verses 14 & 15. It was quoted as Scripture by several Fathers, & the last favourable notice of it until modern times is from 320 or so.

The Coptic Church holds it in high regard - most of the text (some has been lost) was recovered in the late 18th century. It's important as a source of ideas in the NT - especially for the gospels: the figure of the "Son of Man" is very probably based in part on 1 Enoch. It has nothing to say about reincarnation - neither have the other two. The only connection between the three is the figure of Enoch, & the interest (in heavenly secrets) that came to be associated with him in post-OT Judaism.

There is a modern translation of 1 Enoch by James Charlesworth; before that, the was the English translation by R.H. Charles, which is 90 years old; if any ET is available on the Net, that by Charles is likely to be it.

It's not everyone's cup of tea: the book is about the fall of the angels, their punishment, the revelation of heavenly secrets to Enoch, prophecies of the Flood, astronomical details, the Messiah, & the like. It is definitely an acquired taste. emoticon The most obvious thing about it is that most of the 108 chapters are very short.

Correct, the books themselves are not occultic but they came to be used by the occult (lost books of the Bible) as an attempt to say even early Christians held occultish beliefs.
