New Corso Mommy
Hello. I adopted a 4 year old female yesterday. She had been jumping the fence of her previous owner and had been picked up by animal control several times. The owner could no longer take care of her.
Her name is Sophie (was Cookie, pretty close, right?). She is the sweetest girl in the world. However, I do think she has been abused, as she cowards when you pet her.
She is getting used to our house, the doggie door and her new sister, a 9 year old Great Pyranese (sp?)/Blue Heeler mix.
We are planning on obedience school, though she seems to know basic commands already.
Any suggestions on the abuse issues?
Also, the original owner had to sign a contract with the breeder that she was for pet use only, what does that mean?
I am really excited about this site! Thank you for all of the great information

Re: New Corso Mommy
Pet quality means she is not to be bred or used as a show dog. We have a "pet" Corso and she gives just as many kisses as a show Corso!
Welcome to the site, there are a lot of very wonderful and knowledgeable people here. And congrats on your new girl! Now post some pics!

Re: New Corso Mommy
One of your replys mentioned kisses. I am wondering if this is a good idea with my newly adopted 8y corso. when I got into the car the other day he proceeded to give kisses but they turned into a NIP and it kind of frightened me. so I now discourage it.

Re: New Corso Mommy
I'd take the abuse thing with a grain of salt. People are so quick to jump to abuse conclusions when a lot of dogs simply have submissive temperaments or weak nerves. I think the fear that a dog has been abused can sometimes lead to an owner trying to over compensate with the dog. They end up trying to comfort the dog and end up rewarding the meek and bizarre behavior. Oddly enough, its always best to sort of ignore a dog the first few days that his home with you. It allows the dog to get comfortable without being over loaded with stimulus and it sets you up as the pack leader. You have a life time to do all the rest, so take the time to start off with the righ foundation
