wet, wet, wet . . .

It has been raining virtually non stop since Christmas, interspersed with the odd 38 degree day. Rivers are pumping, farm dams are full and starting to pop, and I am getting orders for Water Buffalo semen. No fun milking cows in the mud and slush.

Doesnt sound like much fun Smous, how do figures compare to last year?
We are lucky cows out here today! Happy days! As soon as they knew they were being let out they went mental and didnt stop running until they got to the field!

In contrast, our land is not even fit for sheep. If our cows are out before mid April it will be because they have escaped.

We inhabit the same bit of rock, you and I, but we are worlds apart. emoticon

What a difference a mere 300 miles makes.

Expecting rain,

I loved your idea of early turnout. Very amusing!

Smous,

Is this mid summer with you? And breeding season busy for the spring calvers?

Big herds like you have there must make one heck of a mess getting through gateways etc

No breeding right now FOAF, earliest will be May for the seasonal boys. Even the year round guys take a step off the gas because of poor takes in the heat. Yup the big herds make a mess of everything, if the roadways aren't good it can be hell for cows right now. Haven't heard it yet this year, but I know off at least one guy who had a paddock of 100 lame cows last year. It has peed all bloody night!

At least we have the option of housing them when it gets really bad.

Right.

I see. Not really. If you are serving may, you are calving Feb/Mar. But thats our spring! Do you actually winter calve then?

Funny, but true. We usually like ours to be out 2nd/3rd week of feb but theres no chance of that happening. We're glad we housed anything under 6 months, they would have just got washed away.
