Re: wet, wet, wet . . .

Just wondered if anyone else in NW UK had noticed how flippin unsettled the weather has been? We are now eight weeks since first cut, and there is no possibility of starting second in the short term going by the forecast. We cut our own, so we need about five dry days straight. I'd say it has rained here every day for the last three weeks. Its going to also make third cut either impossible, or very late. We are just about out of grazing, and will be looking at rehousing something if we don't get some ground cut soon.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I have less than half 2nd cut in FOAF. Just baling a field or 2 if I get 24 hours forecast without rain. It has happened twice in the last month. Doesn't auger well for feed value.
Met office talking about it being unsettled well into August now.

Re: wet, wet, wet . . .

Second cut went in on tuesday, got it mowed on monday and kicked out, but still came in wet. Unfortunatly 2nd goes on top of 1st the analysis of which came in today at 30%dm, so guess it will be wetter than that when it comes to feeding.

Decided just to go ahead as the forecast wasn't promising anything good for the rest of the week and also going in to hospital to get veins done in both legs, which on previous experience left me off work for 8 very long and according to Karen very grumpy weeks.

THe weather forecast is shockingly unreliable, we cut our 2nd cut this week, started tuesday finishing up today. One or two extremely light showers but forecast had predicted more rain. Grass was ready and it was dry so we just went for it, very glad we did as it gets more fields back into the grazing rotation that little bit quicker.

I'm sure we had several inches this week!
The contractor had the mower on to come here again last night when I postponed. I was very forunate as we have had really heavy thunder showers since.

Weather's been unsettled for 3 weeks now, and wehad an inch of rain yesterday, but how we've needed this rain. What little grass there was was starting to get very brown and crispy.

Re: wet, wet, wet . . .

We had a lot of rain at the end of June but the ground was so dry that it took it all nicely. What we have had in the last 3 weeks has put paid to that and we are now very wet.Managed to cut second cut a week past Sunday and had all 90 acres in by the Monday night. We had had 3" of rain on the previous Friday and it has rained every day since that Monday.Still have 50 acres of whole crop and 25 acres of grass to clamp. The whole crop includes 15 acres of under sown barley so the ground conditions need to be right..some hope.

We are now looking at going into August with the ground saturated and the threat of housing cows for the third year running.

Re: wet, wet, wet . . .

We brought twenty big heifers in yesterday. Nearly out of grass and nowhere to move them to. Thought we'd start early and save the ground.

We will consider thinning some other batches next week. I have spent all week watching other people putting their grass in, all of it direct cut, and much of it rained on at some point. The smell of effluent as you drive past some farms is less than pleasant.

I don't really know at this point whether I want to be in their position, or mine.
