Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?
We have a keenan 14 cubic metre, had it 6 months, very pleased with it. Dont know much about tubs, but i cant see how they can leave the ration as fluffy as a paddle mixer.

We have a Lucknow 285. It is a four auger mixer; 285 cu ft and a 65 hp tractor runs it.

Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?
All I have is a tractor with a bale spike on the front, a heap of round bale silage and some out of parlour feeders with some feed in parlour. Expecting 1st cow over 14000kgs in 305days very soon with calving interval on her of 335days.
Highest peak this spring on any cow 64kg.

A few may get 19kg in winter normally up to 17kg is enough to get around 45-50kg of milk. Heifers rarely above 13kg.All depends how good the grass silage is. Its usually pretty decent stuff as I have a highly organised contractor making it.

Tub mixers, what do you have?
I think mixers are only good for mixing things that cows dont like that much or were never meant to eat .
we have a bucket and loader and put buckets of corn silage into trough ,spend 20 minutes spreading ti with a pitch fork and then unroll 2 rolls of haylage over it with a big foot feed out machine.......
cows do their own mixing!

Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?
Soory, I don't necessarily agree foxleigh. Before we had the Green Machine we put in grass silage and top dressed it with a dairy blend and threw in a few small square bales of straw. No matter how well we 'mixed' it together the dominant cows always got the goodies and the quieter wee cows got the left-overs.
Perhaps if you have a long enough feed fence for the entire herd to feed at once with self-locking barriers then your idea would work.
As for getting them to eat things they don't want, ours are now able to have sugar beet , choped straw, grass and wholecrop silage, blend in a nicely presented ration where each cow gets the same feed. Performance, health and condition has improved dramatically. No doubt there are people out there (I prefer NOT to call them farmers) who force unnatural feed into cows, however I believe cows are clever enough to know what's good and what's not!
--- Farming is the oldest JOB in the world, too many people seem to have it confused with the oldest PROFESSION!

Tub mixers, what do you have?
we have a 160 m x 1.5m wide x 1m tall with raised floor rectangular concrete trough with 6 ft of concrete on either side for 180 cows to stand on standing in the middle of a 5 acre paddock out in the open.we have never had a single cow in the trough either.everyone seems to find a spot on the trough ok and everyone "appears to get a feed.
by stuff that cows were never meant to eat I mean ,by products such as chocolate, citrus pulp, canola straw/stalks etc .
