Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?

We have a 12 cubic metre one, now in its third season. We pretty much use it all year round except maybe a couple of months in the summer.
Our main problem with the paddle type one way blocking during filling with often resulted in broken sheer bolts, brokens chains etc and a lot of time spend.
We've never had any problems at all with our tub.

We have a Redrock tub with "banana elevator" ( feeds out quite high and to either side),it's been very reliable and is used 365 days/yr for 8yrs to date.Really would like to change to a bigger one but will have to wait untill milk price improves significantly.

Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?

I know this is about tubs, but there is another side of the story that boyd34 tells about paddles. Our redrock has spring-loaded box section along the top of the chamber, above and slightly to one side of the paddle axle (the non-loading side). There is about a foot of clearance between this and the paddles. Therefore, a block of silage that gets taken forward by the paddle only gets as far as the box section, is knocked back and falls down behind the paddle, preventing a blockage. In the unlikely event of a blockage, the mixer has a reverse gear for discharge, so its not hard to relieve. Five years now, and no shear bolts.

(PS, its also handy that we only have 80hp on the mixer, so it stalls the tractor if a problem occurs).

Your Redrock paddle feeder sounds very similiar to the one we owned.
I'm sure you'll agree that you need to be careful when putting in the last few blocks especially if the silage is really dry this is when most of our blockages occured.

Actually, no. We just drop them in. It has jammed with me twice in over five years, and took two minutes to 'unjam'.

Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?

You're lucky.
Was chatting to one of the guys who works for the machinery dealers we bought the tub from, he said he couldn't remember the last time they sold a Redrock paddle feeder it tended to be mostly tubs now.
But, I agree there are loads of guys out there that have the paddle type one (Keenans, Kuhns, Redrocks etc) and they get on fine. emoticon

Re: Tub mixers, what do you have?

Depends, at the moment we're feeding 40% dry matter first cut, it holds just under 4 ton. With wetter silage (second cut) it can quite easily hold 5 ton +.
