udder injury question

Hello. I have a 3 quartered Jersey cow that has injured her udder. I purchased her as a 3 quartered cow a couple of years ago. She freshened on August 9th. The bad quarter filled with colostrum/milk just like the other 3 but no way to milk out of course, so it was somewhat bigger than the other quarters but not extreemly so.

On Thursday Gloria chased a dog from her pasture (with her udder bouncing back a forth). I assume this caused some bruising because at her next milking the non milking quarter was much larger. Each milking it has continued to become more swollen. Her udder is now huge and tight, it appears to be only the non functioning (no teat opening anyway) quarter that is swollen but is huge. It feels warm but is not red and I assume probably doesn't have mastitis because there shouldn't be a way for bacteria to enter. Gloria continues to have a good appetite and feel good otherwise. She doesn't mind me milking her or touching the swollen quarter. This morning just in front of her udder on her r side, there was a swollen area that seems fluid filled, it is not tight, more like a water balloon. It was about the size of a grapefruit.

Any thoughts? Should this swelling decrease on its own. Do I need to have a veterinarian look at her? How long should I give this swelling to start going down?

Thank you!
Angie

Re: udder injury question

i would rub some white liniment or other products that get blood flowing and decrease the swelling untill a vet could look at it....how long has it been swollen?

Get a vet. My guesss would be that the quarter is probably going to burst at that site and drain an abcess.

Re: udder injury question

Thank you for the above responses. I have not been on site for a few days. Cow is doing well, edema has really gone down. I'm not really sure if it was an injury or post calving edema. She is 17 days post calving now and all is well. Thanks Angie
