white muscle disease
we have just lost a couple of calves to white muscle disease and i suspect we lost about 8 to it last year.
has anyone else experienced this problem, and how have you treated/prevented it from happening?
its caused by a lack of selenium and causes the calf to go stiff and eventualy they cant stand up, it can sometimes look abit like pneumonia but anti biotics have no effect. it seems to strike when they are about 6 weeks old. we have injected them with Vitasel but i think im catching them too late, should i be injecting them when new born?

Re: white muscle disease
Bolus the cow 2 months before calving with a high selenium product (All Trace, Cosecure ) or inject the cow a month before calving.
This seems to prevent problems with the calf

white muscle disease
We give Cosecure (Selenium, Iodine, Copper and Cobalt) at drying off, super job.We usually have dead or very weak calves unless we supplement iodine. We do this as a cost and labour saving measure, no more feeding dry cow minerals at the moment!
