Heifer calf, 5 teats?

Calf was born this afternoon, I noticed it has a small 5th teat what should I do?
Is it simply just a matter of cutting it off or is there more involved.

I've heard of guys using the burdizos on the 'extra' teat, then slice with a clean razor blade and put on loads of blue spray!

You could wait untill she's springing to be sure you're getting the dud one, unless you intend to show her.

Should be a simple job, just cut off and bit of purple spray.

Or you could just leave it if you don't intend to show her.

Don't wait until she is springing. It will be a proper teat with a blood flow, and a teat canal etc.

We do them with the scalpel at around bulling age. No blemish will be left up to this stage. If she is in calf, the bag is forming, then you may get a scar.

I'd have half a dozen of these every year.

Used to do them with the scalpel but now use a really sharp pair of scissors and of course pink spray or iodine when done. usually the same time as we dehorn.

The tiny extra teats usually don't bleed when you snip them.

IF you left it too long and were afraid of it bleeding then we use the rubber ring for castrating lambs, just pop it over the extra teat and it'll be gone in a week, will most likely leave a small scar though

and if you are unlucky and the teat you cut off has a milk canal and milk producing tissue when she calves in as a heifer and the closed off quarter produces milk you may be unlucky enuf to have that whole quarter swell up and absess off.(this has happened to us on a jersey whose whole rear udder abssessed and then popped leaving a huge hole (the absess was over 4 inches across at the highest point.)This basically ruined the heifer and was not at all pleasent for her.The heifer got sick and needed a vet visit.
