That's why you need to do it as early as possible too

Have never found that the extra teat has had a teat canal, the extra one is always significantly smaller than the others so cutting of the wrong one shouldn't occur i would have thought?

My question is what was the age the heifer in question was that foxleigh was referring to.

Hmm wonder what happens if you snip one of the main teats as a calf? three "quarters" (no one try this at home :P)

Re: …

We turn every heifer calf over at the same time as dehorning and cut off extra teats with a pair of scissors.

we had bought 20 joined heifers and so had no idea any were done until amy absessed up and required vet treatment.another cow in the bought herd mustve had at least 2 cut of her rear udder and everytime she calved in for about a month she had reasonibly big bumps in those quarters where she made milk until it was reabsorbed.
I know of breeders who never used to buy a herd bull if he had more than 4 teats.
this farm here hasnt cut a teat off in over 15 years and doesnt see it as a problem.

When our vet retired a neighbour booked him to do a few extra teats on his last day. They decided to share a bottle of whiskey before starting, which led to several 3 quartered heifers in 2 years time.

So, a job best done sober.

we've had an occasional spare teat that we miss, but we usually get 99% of them. We've had a couple though that haveproduced milk in their spares, but they dry off a month after calving. just leak for a while

Yep same experiences as LRG, some leakage and then they dry off. I have seen mastitis spread from the spare quarter to one of the four main quarters though. Better to nip the problem in the bud and get it done as calves.
