Who'd be a judge????

Theyr'e on a hiding to nothing really, MIke Deaver summed it up when he gave his reasons at the Winter Fair, when he said about getting on with friends old and new.

It's been highlighted in the Expo thread about how people will always question the eligibility of a judge and I think we'll all agree that you'll never please everyone who ever judges.

I think, as will the majority of you, that if a judge can give DECISIVE and ACCURATE reasons for how he places a class, then whatever decision he makes, it's easier to live with.

I'm interested to hear from others, who's judging they admire and particularly who they think excels at giving reasons.

I think David Jones' reasons are a different class to just about anybody I have heard. His judging is very good as well!

Re: Who'd be a judge????

There are alot of great young judges in this country and i think its time that we give them a chance at judging some of our major show.

I think the standard of reason giving is improving over here, but it needed to. There's quite a few of the older guys who judge and whilst I respect them and have no doubt at their ability to know or place cows, their reason giving leaves alot to be desired.

To be able to hold the ringsides attention whilst putting across your reasons for placing them in that order is hugely important.
Some people that judge have a natural charisma, in the way that they give reasons..like Brian Carscadden and Dave Chalack. Over here I've been impressed with both Paul and Steve Miller..... they're confident and precise with their comments and come across really well.

They have started putting emphasis on reason giving at our guernsey judges workshops in the last 2 years or so. It is also the case that the younger newer qualified judges are able to stand up and give good vaild reasons, but the old timers really dont have the nack.

Bias i know but one of the best reasons givers is my mother(Kim Sales), always able to speak clearly and she is able to give good reasons that are justified, right person to be chairperson of the Guernsey judges panel, another good reason giver James Warren being the youngest judge has had alot of practise through young farmers

do you think YFC, HYB etc have made a diffrence as too giving practise on a less pressured level? I think it has been a good help though sometimes dosent give them the ability to pace their way to bottom of a long line of exhibits.

Denny Patrick, Bob Fitzsimmons, Loren Elsass, Jim Burdette, Michael Heath, Mike Deaver, Brent Walker, Brian Craswell
I feel all of these can give accurate and fluid reasons adn are talented judges.

Surely the best judges are those that competently place the animals in the (their) correct order. This is usually achieved with the benefit of many years experience in the REAL world.

Why does a 'good' judge have to be a showman too? Sure, it adds to the spectacle but it won't make them a better judge.

I agree, no-one ever said they have to be a good show-man to judge shows, but in reference to Charrymans quote how does it make for a good spectacle if the judge is a Showman??????????

No matter how good any judge is, there is always going to be someone out there that complains about him and thinks he knows more.

Who'd be a judge????

Classcow I am going to add Jason Myers (windsor manor in md) and my dad Curtis day to the list(obviously I am biased on this one, but he has bred a good cow or two(all americans in three different breeds) and can really talk on the microphone) and the same goes for jason myers he has bred all american nominations in three breeds also and knows cows and can talk. Interesting how many of these guys came out of the Maryland 4-H program...

Who'd be a judge????

Never seen Jason Myers or this Curtis Day guy - whoever that is LOL!! - judge but I would certainly think both men would be qualified. As you said, they have both bred terrific herds of cows and milked their own cows twice a day every day. I respect those qualities a lot. I am certain there are many other up and coming judges here in the US that I have not seen (on both coasts probably) that are well qualified.
I have heard that Heath was actually a livestock judge in 4-H - is that true? I was surprised as he is a talented man with a keen eye for cows.

Re: Who'd be a judge????

Our best judges (in my opinion) are Jos Knoef (has the highest number of 100 ton and 10 ton cows in his herd), Johan van Beek (Southland) and Jan Steegink (Red Holstein breeder).

They have the disadvantage that they aren't native English speakers, so don't judge abroad that often.

There are also some classifiers that are pretty good.

Re: Who'd be a judge????

Donner, Phoenix, cut from the same cloth, neither have bred a good cow in their life.
Typical of many of the so called top Canadian judges. Not sure why that is, but thats how it is. Most come from the show jockey mentality - by that I mean they have been fitters for those who actually bred cows, OR they purchashed usually in partnership animals that do well. (Those that get fitted best)

Re: Who'd be a judge????

If you look at the majority of top show herds, the majority have not bred their own animals. The top cows are usually all purchased. But then again, a lot of the top show cows never breed as good as the animal, so the heifers are sold.

To answer your question I was at Expo and watched the show I thought Doner did an excellent job. I didn't agree with Durham Blue being Reserve Senior and Reserve Grand, but other than that I really think he hit everything right on the head. Hazel and Roy Image made a great pair of young cows and Ideal was definately the worthy champion. The only thing I would have changed was that I would have made the Charles 125000 pound cow Reserve Senior Champion. So yes I was there and thought he missed one cow, but for the most part was on the money all day long.

Who'd be a judge????

I thought Doner did a less than adequate job. It all started with his winter calf winner and the poor quality of his heifer class winners showed in the champion line-up.
Hazel and Image could have been found by Ray Charles!! Easily the best 2 young cows at the show in my opinion. I think his top 2 5 year olds were bad.
The telling tale was when he pulled a cow 8th in the first pull, her leadsman got shat upon and they switched leadsmen and Doner then placed her next to last. Not THAT is inconsistency!! (and humurous)

I like Deaver, Garrison, Patrick, Walker, Craswell, Fitzsimmons.
