Re: IDW 2008
He'll do a good job. . . .he is a great cow-man and gets alot of milk from very correct uniform cows.
Udders will be a priority, and I predict he'll put emphasis on good legs and feet. He won't go for extremes, he is very conscious of the type of cows farmers want, and from what I've seen he'll do a nice job. . . .The 64" hat rack won't be his type of cow!

Foxleigh, I think you will really like Mick's judging. He goes for powerful, deep cows and as Mootoyou says he will prioritize udders. Anything that is frail need not bother. Mick is also not overly concerned about how tall a cow is.
I am guessing that anyway because he made our 60 1/2 inch Merchant reserve champion at the Highland show!

i have to admit I did enter one of our linjets from wilonna sb lite gay but she probably wont go as a) she is stale and b)I not that motivated .I hope brian isnt reading this but the entryfee/show catalogue is an increadibly cheap way to advertise ownership of a pedigree to a large audience who is type orientated - we are still having enquiries re the red triple threat I entered last year.
I also have issues with exhibitor behaviour.Stalls are allocated at least 7 days before judging day. When Im not showing I usually make a point of telling the person alongside where I should be that they can have my stall.Generally I bring my animal in the night before judging.Having paid for an entry and a sawdustfee ($55)one woud think that you space is yours !the last 3 years the tag that tells where I was to tie up was removed by someone by sunday.despite socalled restricted areas re johnes I have even been told to tie up whereever there is room on the wed night.all this gives me da s h i t s so this year im going to take 2 gates down there as wel as a deckchair!to claim my space and I shall withdraw my animal judging morning.

usually get 2 vehicle passes as an exhibitor.in the past entry fees have been 10$ ea ,we usually go for both the holstein and ilawarra days so that $40.if u pay at the gate u have to pay cash and cant get a receipt for tax purposes. This way for a few dolars more I get a tax invoice,a mention in the catalogue as well as our days out and sometimes I even take an animal.for those who are interested the first heifer I showed is now a VG cow.(6th) the VG 3yo raider cow I showed stood 9th same year, the sirchrostopher that I pulled out of the paddock on the monday 2 years ago, clipped the night before showing stood 12th and is now VG89.so the ones i enter are not ugly just I dont always get that motivated especialy if it is hot

I can't wait to be there! I leave for Australia on Monday to join the Illawarra international tour in Sydney, and then spending the week at IDW, while trying to do a few visits to some neighbouring herds. (both Illawarra and Jersey).
I've always wanted to get to Australia - can't wait!

weatherwise it is going to be in the high 30s low 40s(100+)Im sure you are going to have fun - the illawarra boys are aways most welcoming.
my pic of the jersey herds in the district would be Jugiong - thats where I always take people and our holstein subbranch has held a youth type day there.if the illawarra tour isnt going there both lemon grove and llandory woud be 2 illawarra herds worth going to see.if u want phone nos give me a pm

Re: IDW 2008
About 40deg.c here today, so hope it is a bit more bearable by monday week ,when the action starts. I like the sound of the holstein judge, hope he can find the cows to suit him. Oceanbrae, i also know a couple of illawarra breeders fairly close to dairy week, and would be happy to introduce you to them at the show. Also a neighbour is a leading jersey man, we are 10 min. from show, so if you would like to meet these breeders get in touch.

Re: IDW 2008
Last i heard of renegade jane, they sent ivf goldwyn eggs to aus a couple of years ago, for no result. She must be getting on now. We already have a storm jane, so no need to go back to the source.

I think that renegade jane must be pushing 15 - we saw her in feb 1996 when she was springing and how they kept her ligament from popping I will never know.

Re: IDW 2008
Holstein judge did a very good job in the classes i saw, which was the first four in milk classes. His first 3 or 4 placings were ,i thought spot on. My only gripe would be that some of the cows he put 4-8 should have been well down the line, but he got the top placings right. One disappointment was the quality of the aged cow class was not up to anything like the normal standard, so a good judge told me. The older classes are usually the highlight. Saw most of the milking jersey show and the judge ,in my opinion, and most i spoke ,to was at best ordinary

IDW 2008
Saw the photos on "Crazy Cow" I saw the photo of the Leader cow on it and I thought her udder looked tremendous, but she was just showing her age in her pins abit.
Glad to hear the Brit judging went down well!

Re: IDW 2008
That cow does have a great udder, but she also has some faults. A bit short from hip to pin for mine, but her feet and legs hold her back . She is one that looks ok in the ring at 1/2 km an hr, but at true walking pace it is a different story. I should say that i did not see her this year, so my opinion is based on previous years.

IDW 2008
we went for the milking classes of the illawarras and the holsteins altho I didnt watch the last 2 classes of holsteins closely as the boss swiped the book and his majesty was getting hot and tired.(unreasonible).
illawarras was interesting from point of view that keith dorries(groomsman of us)and breeder of champion cow sat with us an both him and doug were youthful knockabout mates of the boss.to be honest champion was smooth enuf and keith has bred better cows over the years.the reserve had dropped enuf udder to look "older" than she was.keith said there was 3months in age difference between the 2 .we felt there couldve been a case for the cow that won best udder, first 5yo to step up.but as Geoff said thats why dougs in the ring and Im not!It was interesting to see the first of the red holstein crosses that were shown as calves back at the first show come back as mature cows thus showing how far the breed has come.all in all a good show and as doug said afterwards there were enuf good ones in each class to make it easy to judge.
As for the holsteins well 21/2 in milk most of them looked like mature cows - only about 3 had udders above hocks and all were as tall as giraffes and Im glad I left our 3yo old at home - she wouldve looked like a baby amongst the others.I really did like the linjet that was intermediate champion.I have to agree with mooramba except if some of those plainer ones hadve been mine Id have left them home and I did say to an illawarra friend of mine who is also a judge that I prefered illawarra classes as the cows looked more real and after a while holstein classes get tedious as one big udder after an other parades past.

Re: IDW 2008
Foxleigh,
can you tell me which cows Keith has that are better then Anegline 8? as I read your comments I started to wonder if you really know a cow? You say Angeline is smooth??? Well, I'm pretty sure she is, if anything, a wringing wet dairy cow. she is one of the wedgiest cows we have in our herd. The 5yr old cow is a nice cow of Ian's, but it wasn't her day - Angeline was ready. One thing you are right about is that you are not the judge!!! (thank god)
Mooramba, take your comment's on board re Leader Josie, and I know we had a couple hours too much milk on her (because the judge was very, very slow), but the cow walks in our main herd at home the same as every other cow and she has never been lame.
Ok, she might not be the best foot and legged cow in the world, but when you take 50 litres off her after judging I think you could forgive her for not tracking dead straight on the day.

IDW 2008
Angeline 8 is perhaps the best Milking Shorthorn/Illawarra cow I have seen in the flesh. I can't find a lot on her I'd want to change, and I'd love a barn full of daughters of her! I really like Verbena and the Glenbrook cow too...but in my opinion I didn't see any other way for that show to go than with Angeline on top

IDW 2008
rapped over the knuckles good and proper by better judges than I and dean I said in the past... Keith has had better cows. After all he has been premier breeder at brisbane royal for many years. And in that time had many other champion cows. And I believe I said smooth enuf not thick or coarse or beefy. And perhaps that illusion of smoothness comes from the fact that she is not long calved and hasnt stripped down as much as she needs to to look like a "ringing wet dairy cow"
