A good size for a July 07 heifer for show?
I was curious as to the answer to the topic. I have a couple I hope to take out to Syracuse in April, and without putting them up next to another animal, I have no idea how they compare. I know I am going up against animals that have both slid dates, and freaks (just plain big). So to get an idea ahead of time, will help deciding whether I would actually take them or not.
Edit: Forgot to add, a good size by then, would be 9 months old, and in some cases 10 months. However these guys are going to be 9 months old at that time.
Thanks..
Jeff

Re: A good size for a July 07 heifer for show?
I think that a good size for june heifer calves should be around 50 to 51 inches now for the big junes calves. so think about 49 for your july heifer if you want to compete.

I think right now 46 or 47 inches would put you on the right track for the show season. How big are they now?

"rumor" is a big, big word
I always figure on the rule: 44 @ 4 months then 2 inches each month - that is a good pace I think

What about for a bull calf - height at a year?

What about for a 13 month old heifer, the 2 inch rule a month would make for a freak of nature, what would you say is a good height, not that it matters much as our National is cancelled!

Obviously the rule does not take place forever - commen sense takes over. Usually can work for the first 6-9 months or so of a calf's life. a "general rule". Growing does slow down for sure, but it is a rough rule that will give you an idea. This rule would make calves 50" at 7 months = March calves at Madison and we all know that is not big enough for there anymore, but it will make you competitive for many lower level shows.

Re: A good size for a July 07 heifer for show?
Our March calf from last year is 54.5 inches right now, she's not quite 10 months old yet. I agree with the 44 inches at 4 months then 2 inches per month. Yes, at some point they obviously slow down.
