All Britain Calf show

We have just heard that the HUK board members are talking about cancelling the All Britain Calf show 2008 and will be having a meeting at the Royal show to confirm this. I urge you all to contact your board member and lobby in no uncertain terms for the show to be held. I think some of the board do not realise the huge benefits the young members bring to our society.

Re: All Britain Calf show

How do you propose they hold a truly 'All Britain' calf show with the country split into different zones with the bluetongue situation?

Cancelling the National Holstein show was a painful decision, but the situation at the Royal with just one Holstein exhibitor makes it look a sound one.

Re: All Britain Calf show

its proposed or is happening, that the all britain calf show will be moved to february, the day before the holstein show.
to me this takes the limelight away from the hyb members and clubs, the calf show is a weekend for the young members where team spirit and fun is rolled into to one to put on the best spectacle of show calves and team work, which i feel is not far from being as good as canadas scotiabank classic

I hope not or it will be All britain calf show and not all breeds. It they did move it is would be very selfish to us coloured breeds young breeders in this day and age all breeds must be encouraged to work together and make a good show of it not just black and whites!!!

Could the clash with the world holstein conference in Ireland be also a factor?

Re: All Britain Calf show

It has absolutely nothing to do with the World Conference it is, as big bird pointed out, impossible to have an all britain calf show in October when large parts of the country will be not/ mid vaccination and still split zones, simply unachievable.
It is proposed to follow exactly the same format as a normal all britain, including all breeds, just being held in the vector free period ie february.
This is the most practical solution in somewhat troublesome times. I suggest we all stop being so negative and cooking up conspiracy theories and channel our energies into making it once again a truly great event.

I wasn't cooking up any conspiracy theories,I just wondered if it had been a consideration.

Will there be two calf shows in 2009 now then?

Re: All Britain Calf show

If they're thinking about having one in febuary they might as well make it part of the Holstein show

Good they are still going to include all breeds.

Just wondering last night, as this means it is 4 months later all the calves will all be 4 months older so will classes (age wise) change to accommodate as it would mean some calves would not longer fit their usual classes age wise you will got some too old.

Will qualifiers by push froward too as for the youngest class you could have a calf that will be 6 months by feb but will only 2 months buy august when most qualifiers take part and thats too young to really know what the calves going to be like and too young really to train properly.

Well personally I think moving the Calf Show to be in a Vector Free Period was the only option, in addition I look forward to the fact that such a well supported and widely admired event will now be part of the Centenary Holstein Show.

there were talks of having two sets of calf classes? what does everyone reckon to that? surely one set of classes would be a considerably better quality to the other?
and would the hosltein show have they same judge as the all britain?

I think he means, will they have just one calf show or two one being the all britain and one the classes on the first day of nationals

Surely they will just have one calf show as part of the all britain all breeds and then an adult show for national holstein show?

In my oppinion the regional qualifiers will have to be moved on a few months, calves change so much in a few months, in order for the best calves to qualify it makes sense to hold the qualifiers possibly just into the new year. I know there has been some concern from club members that they will be in the midst of revision, but really this shouldn't be issue, surely setting aside 30 mins each day to work with a calf, doesn't have too much an impact on the grades.
