Hay fill advice

I have a heifer that refuses to eat beet pulp and really needs it. I'm pretty much relying on a hay fill only. Is it best to start her out on coarser hay (w/ more stem) a few days before the show and then switch her over to a 2nd cut finer, grassy hay?

I can get this heifer to eat some beet pulp when I coax her along with small amounts of grain, but she tires of it really fast (even w/ the grain). I've never had a heifer quite like this one and am not the best at filling with hay. Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Keep her on the coarse hay as much as you can. If she keeps eating that she should dig into the finer stuff or second cut on showday. If she's not eating try a a couple inches of molasses at the bottom of a pop bottle and then mix some hot water in with it. Dump it over the coarse hay, or any hay if she's not eating, and she should dig right in. I know somebody that put a full bale of coarse hay in front of a calf with this done to it and when he arrived show morning the calf had devoured the bale and she was filled for the ring. I've tried it at home as well with a couple of sick cows just trying to get them to eat, and it works great

Re: …

Have you tried RUMEFIL? It is a beetpulp like product marketed by Moormans and ADM. Instead of being based on beet pulp is made from ALfalfa meal. I have used it some this summer and really like it. It is in pellets and the cattle will eat it dry. It also expands more than beet pulp and they dont get the scoots after wards.

Re: …

Do you have any access to oat hay? Cattle will devour that stuff, throw it to her the night before the show.

Re: …

I mix dry beet pulp and soybean meal for show heifers. At least I did when I showed, and always had great results. Just like a chia pet, add water and watch them grow. On second thought, maybe practice before the show.

Hay fill advice

Thanks everyone for the advice. I used the oat hay and molasses trick. My calves ended up 5th and 6th, so not too bad. I tried to find RUMEFIL, but it would have had to have been special ordered and there wasn't enough time to get it before the show. The rep said that they tried to market it to show people, but w/o much success. I'll give it a try next spring.
