Moira Bull Sale

Got the catalogue yesterday, some great pedigrees, unfortunately won't be able to make it (stuck in the orifice!) Would be interested to know what Sam McCormick's Shottle from the Maudes makes, and the Newry bull out of the Barbies too! If anyone is there perhaps they could take a few notes? Thanks!!

Re: Moira Bull Sale

I left it a bit late to phone for catalogue. It should have came today but maybe postal strike held it up?

Anyway, I saw my uncle's catalogue when I was home at the weekend. It was quite thick - not sure how many lots but it seemed like more than usual.

Having said that, a couple of the main exhibitors are missing - I'm guessing they may be closed up.

Still no shortage of good bulls though!

Something over 50 entries, great catalogue, noticed some missing too, McCleans for 1.

Sale should be underway at the moment, dunno who's doing it, hopefully Willie is up to it.

Re: Moira Bull Sale

Glad I didn't make it to the sale!!!

I couldn't have afforded over 4600 gns for the one I had my eye on in the catalogue!!

I'm glad the sale went well, seemingly Willie isn't well at all, undergoing treatment but unable to be out of bed the rest of the time.

Please pray for him.

…Moira Bull Sale

Will,I'm curious as to why you have the idea that "the sale went well",as I thought it was one of the worst November Bull Sales in recent years(lowest prices). Some Bulls with world class pedigrees and good figures making just over 1000gns.I know quite a few of the breeders were disapointed with trade.

Re: Moira Bull Sale

I totally understand why a vendor wants to maximise the price for his bull, considering the costs involved in flush work, rearing etc.

However, I can also see from a buyers point of view that 1000-1500 is plenty for a bull which could break his rod next week.

There is an exceptional market for bulls in northern ireland, which would otherwise be going to a spanish feedlot had they been born anywhere else.

Re: Moira Bull Sale

Only for the bull market we have in N.I, breeding high genetic merit cattle would simply be unprofitable and not worthwhile! Maybe should we as Holstein NI be forming a marketing group to get more out of the sale of heifers and embryos and thus take the pressure of bull sales? Very disheartening to see "world class" bulls, turned out to perfection selling for that kind of money.

Re: Moira Bull Sale

I know it was dissappointing that only 30 of the stock presented sold, but I thought the top price was good considering the still realtively poor milk price being recieved through the farm gate. Probably alot less than a Shottle from Maude would have made in better times.

Perhaps there are just too many being reared now, for a shrinking number of dairy farmers?
