MUTANT offspring
With all the talk of this gene, what are the calves looking like? I've wanted to try Mutant, but am not a fan of the Champion bloodlines. Does anyone have some useful descriptions of his offspring?

Re: MUTANT offspring
I don't know about Mutant, but we are milking a number of Champions and are really pleased with them, you know his faults and if protected for them, Champion has been really consistent for us, and left us with some great 2 year olds.
Also we've got about 20 grandaughters on the ground by Joylan Eurostar who's at Cogent( Champion X Durham Glora Ex92 X Blackstar Glora Ex92- who was full sister to Bonatus and from the Gloriette family) They are great calves and show alot of potential.

Re: MUTANT offspring
We have about 30 Mutant calves. They are pretty uniform. They are long with good width and depth throughout. They walk uphill but are not extremly tall. They have good bone quality and don't show any of the Rudolph traits in their feet.Rumps have good width but some have a high tailhead.Overall real nice calves but not showy.

Re: MUTANT offspring
Hi Ilander,
how many red calves did you get from black cows that are not red carrier and how many black calves from red cows did you get?

Re: MUTANT offspring
Mutant calves have run about 55% red out all cows.We don't have any from red cows and haven't checked for RC inthe black cows.

Re: MUTANT offspring
Message for all who have Red mutant heifers. The oldest ones are breeding age.My advice for breeding would be to choose one of two paths with matings. One use the best sire possible(not *rc)and produce a unique red(ie;Shottle)or two use the best red sire to eventually produce an animal that will always produce red(e/e&vr/vr).I am the breeder of Mutant,so take it for what it is.Just my opinion.

Re: MUTANT offspring
Even with e/e and *VR, unless you bred them to a black bull and get red, you will never know if the *VR is there. Buyer beware again the *VR is not a dominate gene, feel free to use all you want, but it is not going to be the answer for breeding "true" red.

MUTANT offspring
Had two daughters of gibson calve out in the last month, our first Mutants, resulting in 3 red &white females. All seem to be good thrifty calves.

Re: MUTANT offspring
How do you mean CANUK itl not breed true red? Is it a red that changes to black? Im a bit confused about the mutant bulls genes/effects.

Re: MUTANT offspring
If a red animal, is bred to a red animal, you should exspect a red animal. Thats not going to happen with VR or VRC, what it means, is don`t exspect to get what your looking for. I think there is more than enough info on this subject now. For those who choose to use this VR stuff good luck to you, it is your rightfull choice, and it is interesting for sure.
Finaly - If you are considering using this gene, for whatever reason perhaps a phonecall to the RWDCA would be a good idea. They have an open herdbook that will let you register any RED animal, of any breed.
