Fradon Jet Red

We have 3 Jet red heifers i not blown away by them but used as a sweep up on bad breeders but interestingly one is polled i tried to disbud it at 4 weeks old couldnt find anything and doubted myself so had 2 others check it . It the first polled calf we have come across , its mother was a Manat . Anyone else got any?

We've got one on the ground now - she's a decent heifer.

4 heifers coming in December. Hopefully we have better luck with Jet than we did with Redliner.

I should get her DNA tested because I don't think there is any chance that Jet Red would leave a polled calf.

Re: Fradon Jet Red

Ya. I tend to agree. I can't see it happening because it is a dominant gene. Jet Red is not polled, so therefore, unless the dam is polled, I would think the calf would have to be horned.

Re: Fradon Jet Red

I used to dehorn calves for a number of breeders in the area. I ran across two Skyfame calves that were polled, every trip in, the same thing, no horns. I figured it must be goofy bulls that he used previously.

Re: Fradon Jet Red

If I am thinking correctly, the polled gene is dominent, so the dams' of those two sky fame calves would have to be polled in order for the sky fames to be polled.

Unless, of course there happens to be a recessive polled gene too. The gene is in different alleles in different beef breeds so it is possible...

Re: Fradon Jet Red

I guess this could be true. But wouldn't they know if Sky Fame carried a ressesive polled gene. Wouldn't they publisize that there is also a ressesive polled gene in the holstein breed?

Re: Fradon Jet Red

Hi,
it would be interesting to know more about the maternal line. What is the sire stack?
