Just fitting in nicely on Broa's comment on plastic cartons.

Re: Milk in a Bag

Those plastic containers (ie. the bottles such as the man in the video had) can be a complete pain. They can make a very strong taint on the milk so it comes out smelling and tasting like plastic. Maybe I'm just a wee bit too fussy but I certaintly can't have it. You may not notice it if only taking a drop of it in tea but you certainly do when drinking it on its own as I do.

It seems to be linked to the surface area to volume ratio of the container. The 1 pint bottles are the worst offenders and the problem seems to get decrease slightly with bigger containers.

But what confuses me most is that it varies depending on the shop in which you buy the milk. The milk from Sainsbury's in Ballymena is rotten but Tesco is fine. I think, though I might be wrong, the same dairy (Dale Farm - which is about half a mile away from each)supply both.

Has anyone else noticed or heard of this problem?

Those of you who can get your milk straight from the bulk tank are very priveleged people. It is fantastic stuff - one of the seldom mentioned perks of being a dairy farmer. Go and drink a glassful now and enjoy it, while the rest of us sit here and envy you!

Re: Milk in a Bag

They were in use here in Denmark from the mid 60s to the mid 70s , too often they leaked so production stopped.

Ahh the joys of slow speed internet. Can't open the video but we've had milk in bags here as long as I can remember, it's how most milk is handled here. No big deal when you're used to it and on the odd occasion when I get a plastic jug I notice the taste difference for the worse.

Milk in a Bag

Mmm ... I can remember those bags being used here in the UK, they were rubbish and so easy to split !! One farm is used to go into retailed their own milk in them the air was blue sometimes if you didn't catch it coming off the machine !!
