Save a TEAT for me!!!!

Does anyone have any luck with bringing back a bad quarter at dry off? One of those cheesey thick puss quarter. I have heard of people useing Iodine up the teat, but was just wondering what you have tried.

Thanks,

What is the texture of the quarter feel like. Are there lumps? Is it soft? How long since the quarter was actively infected? Does the "puss" smell bad?

quarter is soft no lumps, does not smell bad. She has been that way since early lactation. She is five months bred now so just trying to figure out what I can do to try and bring it back after dry off

have you been stripping it out all along, or not at all?

not at all, once she lost it and couldn't bring it back just left it alone and thought about overtreating it durring the dry period with Quarter master or something like that

Ok this seems like some of the things I have seen before. There are two schools of thought.

1. Treat it with Dry Cow Antibiotic. The risk is that the quarter is compromised and that you could introduce new bacteria or stir up the old infection. If the teat canal is already sealed up with a keratin plug. I would not do this. You could try a broad spectrum injectable. You probably need to ask your vet on that one.

2. Leave it alone and hope. This sometimes works, sometimes it doesn't. The idea here is that the cow goes through natural changes that could fix the quarter during the dry period. I guess you should ask your vet.

well thats the thing, I have seen quarters like this clear up with just dry treatments at dry off. Have been told that Iodine will dry upthe quarter and you would have a better chance of it comming back when she comes fresh. I have cleaned it out every so often so its not plugged. Didn't want to use any antibiotics while she is milking as we have tried the Polyflex and today, persue tubes. Was just trying to figure out what would be a little hotter and useing the benifits of dry off.

I have been using Spectramast DC. It is effective against both gram negative and gram positive bugs. Bonus is short slaughter hold, no milk hold 30 days after treatment.

Iodine up the quarter could kill the quarter in the wrong concentration.

our vet recomended Iodine when we were in California, I just don't remember the dose. We would also use 60cc of Nolvasan to completly dry up the quarter forever on extream quarters that were hard, hot and just really jacked up.

I didnt say this but using drycow in a lactating cow and milking her into the bucket for a month or so could work.

Re: Save a TEAT for me!!!!

We use quartermaster on our worse lactating cases and you only have to hold it for a week to ten days. We have never held it for more than ten days. The added bonus is you can tell whne to start testing because you can see oil droplets on the surface of the milk when you are done milking her.

We put a dry cow tube into all cows that lose a 1/4 during lactation. Then another when the cow is dried off, probably 70% are fine next lactation.
