Tail Ties

I was wondering what peoples thoughts were on Tail Ties. Advantages and disadvantages. Whether you use them in your barn and if they work well and whether you would put them in a new tiestall barn.

Re: Tail Ties

I see this post has been up for a while and no one responded.

Tail ties have their place. I have been working on a farm for the last ten months that uses them. We took one inch grey plastic pipe cut into about two inche peices and drilled a hole in the pipe to tie the tail ties into. These peices of pipe are on a what basically looks like white plastic clothes line wire suspended from the ceiling. It works really well. I can wash tails when required and tie back up with the tail tie easily. The only disadvantages are when your cows are going outside or there are times when the tail tie gets caught up in the milker when moving from stall to stall. Hope this helps.

Re: Tail Ties

We don't have them in my barn, but if i was building a new tie stall, i would definatley put them in. I think they keep tails a lot cleaner and keep the whole cow cleaner. The only problem would be at our place in the summer, our animals are pastured and we wouldn't be able to tie them then. It would be too much hassle i think.

Tail Ties

used them when I worked in switzerland and my memory wants to tell me that the ties were long pieces of elastic cord that held the tails up out of the gutter when lying down but allowed freedom of movement otherwise.

Tail Ties

Thank you Foxleigh! I had got the general idea but was not sure exactly how they worked.

Re: Tail Ties

Ours are getting caught in the barn cleaner occasionally. Oh well, we had one taken off perfectly that we have used at shows for a couple years now
