Bull Calves

Yeah bull calves are a sore point here the last few years. I have been keeping records for a while and on a 450 cow herd we have had 38, 36, 46, 34 % AI heifers over the last few years.

Its not like were talking small numbers this year is 90 heifers and 175 bulls. Its not even close to 50/50.

This year progeny test semen was the worst. From one company we used 60 straws for 2 heifers and another 50 straws for 1 heifer.

i would guess its something missing in the diet, the selenium thing could be right.

2 heifer calves in a row. Both Angus. emoticon

Incidently, both by a bull Lorabar Mighty Prince. Both calves needed plenty of assistance and are bigger than the holstein bull calves in the pen. Neighbour has had similar issues with the same bull.

Re: Bull Calves

Always the way BB!! We found exactly the same last year, more SRB bull calfs than heifers (not sure of numbers or percentages) but when the AA's started to come in then the bias swung the other way, more heifers than bulls!!

Farming is the oldest JOB in the world, too many people seem to have it confused with the oldest PROFESSION!

Bull Calves

Our only red heifer calved this morning. She was due to Debonair and I was really excited by the potential heifer she could be carrying.

Kiss of death that was, she only had a bull.
