Calf prices
Sent 10 calves to market last week. 9 black+ white bulls and 1 Belgian Blue cross bull. The Belgian made £226 - more than the 9 black+whites put together ! Sure wish there was a bit more choice available in sexed semen.

Re: Calf prices
We did very nicely suckling B+W bull calves on a couple of high scc cows last summer. Calves averaged £90 at a month old which we felt was worth while as long as we had at least 4 at a time to transport.
Once the autumn flush of calves arrived that soon dropped back to under £40, a level that wasn't worth it then to haul them 50 miles to market.

Re: …
We have an abbatoir not far away that will pay something for them, but not a lot.
£10 per calf for July, but they will take them from 4 days old.
If you shoot them yourself you then get charged to pick them up!

Re: Calf prices
We been shut with TB for 3 years and shot 100's of bull calves and kept a fair gang of beef calves they lifted restrictions lact week and i got excited at sending a BBX heifer and a hereford bull it was short lived £63 for the 2 and i thought they were good calves .
By the way any dead stuff and shot calves are picked up for free round here seems to be quite a rare privilege.

Bull calves here,US central midwest, are bringing from $125 to $180 US dollars for nice calves 3 days to a week old. They are purchased mostly to be raised and sold later for beef.

Re: …
Took a trailer load to market today.
Couple of 6 week bulls made over £50 each. 3 plainer fortnighters at £10. One good solid week old £26. 2 Angus heifer calves £20 each.
Only been suckling cell count cows who are going as barreners on Tues, but with the market 50 miles away the next lot go to the abbatoir!

Re: …
Probably should say that other factors influenced the sale of the whole group and the suckle cows. Under normal circumstances I'd probably have taken just the better calves and left the others on the cows for a couple more weeks, but I've other things in the pipeline for the next few weeks and wanted to clear out some stock. It wasn't worth taking one load to market and one to the abbatoir so we chucked the whole lot together. We shall see what we do with the calves again come October, till then their doomed.
I can live with £50 for the older calves. They were worth nothing when they started, the high scc milk is worth nothing, the cows are only eating grass. There's not much in it, but the cheque helps a bit. At least I feel I'm trying, having worked to get live calves out.
Our clinical mastitis has fallen with the higher scc cows out of the way, so leson learned there (again). Other call here is that our yards get very greasy in summer, and if a cow does go down and needs boxing there are some agressive litle suckers about to keep her milked out!

Re: …
Friesian / Holstein Bull Calves
The value of Friesian Bull Calves has decreased recently.
There are a number of reasons for this; the low price for
finished animals has been passed back along the chain,
causing the value of all stock to be reduced.
Over Thirty Month Cattle being allowed back in the food
chain is causing uncertainty for beef farmers, this has
resulted in them being cautious when buying in animals
and has reduced requirements for black and white bulls.
This means the majority go for slaughter at 2 to 3 weeks
of age, the price of their skins has fallen in recent weeks,
and this was the major part of their value.
Many dairy farmers currently struggle to find outlets for
their black and white bull calves due to this lack of
demand, and are having to pay for them to be disposed of.

Re: Calf prices
just sent 2 month old black and white bull calves to market. They had been on an old high cell count cow outside in a paddock. they made a whopping 4pounds each!!! week old ones are making 2-3 pounds each. Don't like to bop them on the head but it looks as if it's going to be the only way.

Re: …
We've been having the hunt pick them up since I sold the last lot end of July. No charge at present.
Can't help thinking that with no initial capital needed there might be profit somewhere down the line with them. One of my relief blokes reckons its crazy that a calf is currently worth less than a chicken!

Re: Calf prices
i've been saying the same for a while now. someone must be able to fatten them up and make a bit of profit on them when there not paying hardly anything for them. its such a waste that they need to be shot at birth.

Calf prices
Im not certain but apart from the various saleyards 3 within 75km there are at least 4 companies picking up and weighing on farm paying cash, cheque and direct deposit into cheque accounts. We get a premium price for calves over 50kg as they are exported as chilled carcasses.I notice that veal in the supermarket is around 8 to 15$ a kg depending on the cut.I dont think these are the 3 months old veal like europe as I dont know anyone anywhere that does this.an awful lot of calves in the yards goe to rearers for bull beef - anything beef x is generally 50 to 200 more than dairy and our exchange rate is 1$ = 42p

…Calf prices
I rear bull calves but they are Swedish Red. Very good growth rates and the right colour for our market. Holstein bull calves generally do not do as well.

Re: …Calf prices
Anyone on mainland UK tested the market on Holstein bull calves yet?
Local market reports give the trade as stregthening, and I'm wondering whether to have a dabble with the latest couple rather than shooting them.

Re: …
Calves that are over 42 days of age will have to be TB tested before being exported, subject to the export market opening.
