Re: …

I haven’t been offered a contract yet so it is looking unlikely now.
I would think very hard before signing a tesco contract. Contrary to most opinions a few months ago I was very suspicious and uneasy about the whole thing. The supermarkets don't do anything that won't benefit them financially and I don't go with the argument they are doing it for positive PR. They don't need good publicity, everyone knows what crooks they are but still people use their shops. They just want to manipulate the producer even more and I believe we will all look back on all this in the same way we look back on the disbandment of the MMB.

The latest condition to the contract I heard about was that you cannot use Belgium Blue. Has anyone else been told this?
As I say I would think hard before signing a contract-but then most likely would.

Mark,

That's a new one on me, though they did say IF, at some time in the future, you wanted to sell cross beef calves to their beef club members, they wouldent be looking for BB calves. The only breed they have talked about wanting for their beef clubs are Angus.

I also keep hearing that they may expect you to have milk up to standard every day but only need "tesco" milk a few days a month so i have heard of benefits being a grand total of £51 a month . We are with sinsburys and i equally sceptical they want to talk about every aspect of our business but milk price last questionaire wanted to know how many children we have and will they take over the business, if they that worried about the future pay us more.

Have also heard that they have struck a deal with Genus to take bull calves away on a scheme to be fattened. Only if by a genus bull though.........If true, they're now just short of telling you which bulls to use.

Re: Tesco In or Out

I went to the Tesco / Wiseman meeting at Hill Valley (Shrops) last week.
There was a talk by some guy from a Cornwall based meat company saying they would take our bull calves at 2 weeks old (minimum) for £20 (minimum).

There was no mention of Genus

I went to the Tesco / Wiseman meeting in Scotland, same as J B, they would take our bull calves at 2 weeks old (minimum) for £20 (minimum)(so long as they were healthy), no mention of Genus.

Re: Tesco In or Out

Is it worth keeping a calf for 2 weeks (minimum) & tagging it for £20?
