I've taken a leaf out of Potter's book too.........after reading that Tesco are doing a promotion on Stella, 8x440ml cans for £4, I decided to buy as many as I could carry and with the help of friends and family I will try to drink them all before New Year

Sir Terry Leahy has said all Tesco suppliers will have to cut prices to help consumers under financial pressure!!!!
Maybe he should think about taking less margin on the milk they sell to help consumers, they could take 10p margin instead of 18p, but I think Tesco will use their muscle to squeeze a cut out of producers.

Cannot argue with you on this one CTCB. UK dairy farmers just do'nt have enough muscle to say no ! If we were all selling collectively we might have a chance but thats never going to happen. Farmers are independant minded people and thats why we sell independantly .We would'nt be farmers if we did'nt think that way !
The end result will be that a few more aged farmers will call it a day and a few more enthusiastic young men will think twice about a hard life for no return !
One of these days the rest of the supply chain will waken up and realise that they have 'killed the goose that laid the golden egg' .What is the point in investing in an industry that does not show any return!

Does that mean that the Dutch, Danes and New Zealanders are not proper farmers? Independant is not the first word that comes to my mind...
No, does'nt mean that at all ,but, I see your point . So,why do you think the price of milk at the UK farm gate is falling while exports are more competetive and the UK is producing less milk than it has since the 70's. Tesco may well want to reduce the price to consumers but it seems to me that the supermarkets control the whole milk industry in the UK . The only way to counter that is for all the farmers to collectively control the supply to the supermarkets. That is not going to happen in the UK !

To say that exports are more competitive is definitely looking hard for the silver lining. I think it might be better to say that imports are less competitive. UK falls behind on a number of fronts. Branding is one. I very much doubt that you will find much in the way of British branded high value products on European shelves, though you don't have to look to hard for the reverse on British shelves. So what is it we are good at exporting? Powder, butter and cheese? Well, they aren't going to return the kind of price that we are looking for. All the currency means, and I'm not knocking it, is that our own commodities used internally get more of a head start against, say, ROI cheese and butter. And intervention is a whole lot more useful to us at 19c now than it would have been at the exchange rate two years ago.
