Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

I received a letter on saturday telling me tha the board of first milk have decided to increase the remuneration of non-executive directors from £22k to £35k for 2DAYS a WEEK.I may be mistaken but ithought this was a farmer owned and run organisation but it looks like the Suits have taken over. The chairman trys to defend the increase with piffiling spin about paying a fair market rate for directors taking time away from there own businesses,we have olny just began to see producers get a fair market rate and the Pigs have ther snouts in the trough!!!. The AGM used to be where any incerase was proposed and either passed or rejected !! so much for democracy!! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

What makes it even worse is that the increase is to be backdated to April. If it was april next year and we were all getting 30ppl an increase would be acceptable but 60% backdated must ring alarm bells!!! emoticon

On Potter's website it says Robert Shearlaw is one of the directors pushing for the pay rise. From what I have seen of Robert when he speaks publicly he is not worthy of any more money, but he maybe he makes a worthwhile contribution to other parts of the business...

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

In fairness ,First Milk is now a much much larger business than it was.

I wouldn`t be prepared to be a director and take all the flak , even for 35k.

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

Got the info about First Milk and Milklink looking to merge.

Would imagine any talk of buying Wisemans is very premature until a merger is completed. Might make more sense if the rumour was of buying Westbury, which is currently run 60% by the 2 co-ops together.

Strikes me that the 2 merging would be good for the members.

I would imagine it would leave DFOB in a fairly dodgy position.

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

My first reaction was , well at least it isn`t a merger with DFOB.

Second thought was that the Kirkcudbright UHT plant was built by the old Scottish Board and things have moved in a long , big circle since then.

Third thought was that Wiseman takeover that has got too pricey for First Milk might be back on the medium term agenda of a bulked up ( steroids?) co-op.

The fit is good because First Milk now have low exposure to butter / powder etc.The geography is also good making the co-op a truly national force.

Glad I didn`t order a new sign just yet !

Don`t think First Link has quite the right ring though.

So what do we think they will call themselves?

They could always go for MILK FIRST.

Reminds me of the Spitting Image sketch about the merger of the Liberals and the SDP.

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

Regardless of the name of the new merged co-op if it goes ahead the big question will be how many Directors will there be from north and the south and what will THEIR renumeration be never mind their expense accounts and milage.

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

From talking to our region director Tom Campbell the impression I get is there job is no way a two day a week job, maybe it was a long time ago in Scotish Milk days but since then we have merged with another co-op and now we are one of the largest cheese producers in the uk. I dont know Sherlaw but Campbell is enthuiastic, plain talking, very approachable. A top man for the job. His mobile phone is never switched off, think how that phone rings from psd off farmers. I bet u some days it'll never stop ringing and how are you meant to work, in this job, with that???? 35k after tax will pay for a dairyman so they can do their job full time. And whats left from paying the dairymen wont really leave that much left for the directors. Go to your regional meetings and you'll find that out.

I spoke to Tom Campbell at Agri Scot and to say he was unhappy with my comments would be an understatement, but after a heated discussion he explained that the job means being away from home sometimes more than 3 days a week and he needed to employ a man to replace him which I accept, but I feel there is a problem when a decision is made to increase their remuneration in early spring and we dont find out until september, there were also 10 rule changes rushed through an extra ordinary AGM in May with no explanation , if these directors want to be paid top dollar they will have to communicate with the members and keep us in the picture, much of the resentment about their remuneration is down to lack of information and trust.

What does anybody think of the 10 minute short film of the AGM and pre-meeting dinner. There is a link on the potter quota news page.
Sorry I am not good enough on this to put the link on here.

…New Director

First Milk appoint a new main board director on friday. I hope it is a practical dairy farmer who prefers a boilersuit to the pinstripe suit we need someone with common sense not a whiz kid with big ideas.
We need a real farmer/director a producers man. Anybody any ideas?

We have a board made up of mainly farmers and it makes not ! damn bit of difference, most of them own shares in the co-op and their share dividend more than outweighs any milk price cuts we have, so much so that we are always at the bottom of the milk price league here in Ireland. The farmers journal used to put us in division 4, but now they have started a relegation zone, it might be comical if it wasn't peoples livelihoods at stake!!

Re: Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

McKeague, please excuse my ignorance of the way the co-ops work over the water, but if the performance is SO bad, why not vote with your feet & sign elsewhere? If you agree with the co-op principle, is there not another co-op?

Campbeltowncowboy, I agree that you need board members that understand "grass roots" farming, but they also need an understanding of how business works in the big, wide world too. A vociferous bloke in a sh*tty boilersuit is not necessarily the best candidate, IMO.

Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

Charryman, we have thought of this but because of our location in the country finding another co-op to supply has become difficult, some suppliers in our region have spoken to another co-op that has promised to get back to thewm with an answer but that was over a year ago. The transport costs are a problem.

Have corporate parasites taken over First Milk

Charryman:- My comment about the boilersuit was a dig at one of the current board members who has just taken on another post(vice chairman of Dairy Co) he is also chairman of NDFAS and he has something to do with the little red tractor, I dont want a new director who is just in it for the renumeration on as many different boards as possible, I would like someone who is fully committed to First Milk and their own business,IMO being a Director of First Milk and running a farm is more than enough, any more commitments and something suffers.
