First Milk Promar Report

First Milk have just released an upto date Promar report into the cost of production. It is very interesting for the first time it focuses on the fact producers need 3ppl profit!! With M&S Tesco and Sainsburys all about to come out with there prices later this month this report should be used by all producer groups to press for a fair return, because if not producers will sell up rather than face the massive increases in fertiliser and feeds and fuel.

Re: First Milk Promar Report

Our milk which has been auctioned at 22-23ppl lately is completely and utterly unacceptable.

But you wouldn't believe the number of farmers I have talked to that think its ok because it starts with a '2'. They remind me that its a lot better than 17p last year. emoticon

We have too many people that produce milk for less than cost because they spend nothing at home or on the farm. Is this just an Ulster phenomenon?

I talked to a danish advisor about the difference in the milk price between them and us. He said, with a wry smile, 'Your cost isn't high enough.'

Re: First Milk Promar Report

I agree. Too many farmers are willing to accept a few pence more ! It's not about getting enough money to scrape by ! The demand for milk is greater than the supply and if the market is to work properly then the price should go up until supply equals demand . It's simple ! If farmers don't get the price up now they never will ! We need enough to reinvest in this industry and to do that we need what Ian Potter Associates says the promar / first milk report implies i.e. 29.64 ppl by April for standard conventional milk. As an organic dairy farmer my price must shadow the conventional price at a 10ppl premium !! If your milk buyer is talking about anything less then leave and sell to the highest bidder !!

dairy farmers get shafted because they love their way of life and everyone knows it.
It's about the only true and wholesome way of living left in the world.

Very few in the UK will see a significant increase this spring. World commodity prices are back from the highs of last year and supermarket bosses are digging their heels in over any more rises.
