Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

A part of the German dairy farmers is on milk strike since yesterday requesting higher milk prices. That means that they refuse to deliver their milk to the dairies/creameries and instead use it for feeding their cows/calves, put it into biogas plants or even put it into the slurry pit.
Participation is very different ranging from about 20% in Lower Saxony to nearly 90% in some regions of Southern Germany, but it is steadily rising. The strike is meant to continue for at least a week. I am still not convinced that it will have any effect, but maybe will start participating tomorrow.
Rumours are spread that the first farmers in Austria, Switzerland, Holland, Luxembourg and France also went on strike. Conversations are allegedly being conducted with the Irish ICMSA.
Is there anyone that has already heard about this or is even planning to participate?

Here around 2,500 members of the DDB have stopped delivering milk and are blocking dairy plants.

I heard about this delivery strike through Farmers For Action and on this website but it is not national news in the UK. I wonder why it is not big enough news over here !

Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

5 minutes ago they told us on the radio that farmers in the EU have had milk prices rises at farmgate of 30 - 60 % and that is why the international markets have softened meaning our own milk price received will drop again.

With inputs riseing every day thats the sort of increase we are looking for!!!
But here in the UK we may have to join our fellow european producers to make processors and retailers take note of our plight.

This was the situation in the winter, but prices only stayed on this level for a short time. Compared to 2006 the average German milk price is higher, but input costs have risen heavily since then.
Some creameries reduced the farmers milk price from 47 Cents to 27 Cents in only 4 or 5 months. Our creamery never payed more than 40 Cents and is now at 30 Cents.
Due to the low US Dollar there is no chance of selling surplus milk on the world market...

Re: Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

I think its amazing. They really have got guts to do something which initially will hurt quite a bit.

Its something that would appear to be catching on, and on a European scale, has the potential to have a big effect.

However, should we in the UK benefit from the knock-on effects, if we haven't been prepared to suffer too?

funny.....
they tell us here that because the US$ is high (currently 1A$ =0.95 US$)we have to receive a price drop as noone will buy it at that price

No Foxleigh, the A$ is high in comparison to the US$:
In december you received 0.85 to 0.88 US$ per 1 A$

Now you receive about 0.95 US$ per 1 A$.

Thus the value of the US$ dropped.

Re: Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

The US dollar is going into the crapper... Either way, this same type of strike should be done here in the states. Input costs, and the fact the middle man is making a killing.. Organic market is even worse. Did some calculating. The US farmer is getting paid with a store price at $4 gallon, roughly 1.60 a gallon. The dairy farmer should be getting 2.25 a gallon equiv, which would be $26/cwt..

There is only one way to get an higher milk price: asking for higher price!

Give the milk directly to consumers for free or at costs or feed animals with it, or just throw it and ASK 0.01 €/lt for each day of protest, when you have 10/15 % increase of current price than you can sign the contract.

Funny you mention that, this is why here in the states, the government and interstate milk shippers do not like raw milk. 1: The government cant collect taxes off of it. 2: This means money that isn't in the pockets of those making money off of the farmer, which are the co-ops etc. Contrary to beleif it isn't health safety, its the all "mighty" dollar, or in your guys case, euro/lb etc.

Re: Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

Jeff, we live in a world of red tape and legality. The key word is liability. Milk is traceable and tested along the way so that if anything untoward crops up, it can be isloated and someone can take the blame. The government wishes to see that it has done its bit for public health. The shop doesn't want product that will have gone off before the customer uses half of it, and both they and processors need to, in the event of a claim, be able to confirm that the product was processed and packed to accepted industry standards. Perhaps you should see pasturisation as a means of improving the product you make for the public.

we dont need to go on strike ..... mother nature is taking care of it for us.......between lack of rain and thus no autumn break.....no dry land feed .......high grain and hay costs due to low harvest......herds are being sold up on a daily basis and mostly not to be milked either. We are shipping 20 to the works today and Im betting another 20 will leave after winter incentive drops in aug.

I hope this is sarcastic...

I want a free market for Dairy Business. We have increasing costs each day and decreasing incomes.

I'm don't sure that with free market we are able to continue to produce in our country and also if we leave quota system we have the N law and with these we are at the level too...
You are stayed many times in Canada but you haven't learn emoticon !!!
In Italy we could increase of no more than 10-15% the production, however we don't get the self - sufficiency, for me there is only something to lose. We need to care the system also if our governement isn't able to manage that

im not being sarcastic.....we have had 3 inches of rain in 5 months.....prior year rainfall was not much better. At current irrigation outlooks you will be lucky to buy as much as a peach next summer....just ask the boys down the river who are trying to keep fruit trees alive. If the milk prices drop here there will be another major exodus from the industry....people have borrowed 100,000s of dollars on cow feed to get to here there is noway this can continue without a complete loss of equity.

Understood.. However, there are people who can't drink pasteurized/homogenized milk, but can drink raw milk. I know my own personal experience with regular milk or milk products from the stores. It has an after taste, and it doesn't settle right with me. The milk from the farm (ours), I have no problems with.. Of course it does help when the milk has a PI from 1-10k, bacteria of 1000 and Scc around 50-70k..

So yes there are the legal issues, but the real reason behind pasteurization is no longer a concern. It wasn't pathogens. It was due to those handling the milk (people with TB and other diseases), and the way it was handled. But even on some of the dirtiest farms, the milk is handled better than the way it was in the early part of the 20th century.. Even though, id be cautious from that type of farm..

Jeff

Germany's dairy farmers on strike!

The science behind the "raw milk" movement is less satisfactory than the science behind oregano usage. In Ohio this debate was raging, and is still finding its way through the courts. You can lease cows for raw milk, but not buy milk. One of the chief scientific experts put forward was a high school kid that took some plate samples on raw milk. I was underwhelmed.

That is all.

"Milk strike ends as farmers accept price rise. Switzerland's dairy farmers have negotiated a price increase of SFr0.06 ($0.058) per kilo of milk with the main processors, agreeing to end a weeklong strike."

Price from 1st July would be about 0.4711 €/kg. They got about 10% increment. Hope German friends would get that too. Any news?

There were some conversations between farmers, milk industry and big supermarket chains, but no results as yet.
Yesterday farmers blockaded many dairy plants. Thus no milk could go in and no milk products could be delivered. Some of them are still closed today. The police had to clear some of the blockades.
Obviously clearly less than 50% of the German milk has been delivered to the creameries yesterday and supermarkets are slowly running out of milk.
