On the subject of currencies, Paul Robson from RBS is quoted on the BBC news website as saying, "Going forward, we do not like the Euro".
He means that the relative strength of the euro is now past its peak.
Lets see what happens after tomorrow's rate cut.

Me and my family are in, looking optimisitic for 2009. There are a number of reasons for this:
1) We've done the budget (before the interest rate cut) and it looked ok - not brilliant but theres nothing we can until the milk price improves.
2)The interest rate cut has helped us and wasn't something we had planned on. We've borrowed (for us anyway) a considerable sum to purchase some adjoining land bringing our farming acreage to around 450 acres - around 400 of which is in a big block and in walking distance for the cows. Having that cut means we could pay off this debt sooner than later.
3)We've managed to secure some money from our landlords for improvements which have been a long time coming. I was fortunate to be involved in a discussion on how this might be used - DIY bio-digester and a labour saving cubicle building came high on my list. It will be interesting to see how its spent.
I think the biggest factor though, is that i'm returning home after finishing college (hopefully!). Its been a tough few years for us as we haven't been able to justify paying for a decent herdsman and so have had to settle for imported staff from Poland etc. Some have been good, some bad and we've managed to muddle our way through. I think me returning home, bright eyed and bushy tailed bursting with energy and enthusiasm and desperate to manage the cows was what he needed to confirm with himself that he was doing the right thing by continuing.
Onwards and upwards!

Sounds a bit like me when my parents retired here in April '97! I am afraid that for all sorts of reasons the last 11 years have dimmed some of that energy and enthusiasm but I sincerely hope that everything works out for you and your family...if you don't make a success of it then heaven help the rest of the UK dairy industry!
I have had a canny knack of finding opportunites out of threats and the current climate surrounding the industry is a classic example.

Not quite sure what you mean by that, Charryman.
Ive seen a couple of instances where the boy returning from college has missed out due to the dad holding him back.
To me, enthusiasm is the same as determination.

I know he means it in a positive way.
College is a great place for ideas to bloom. Too much farm work tends to tie up more and more of your capacity to be creative, especially when you get married, and moreso when family comes along.
That creativity will find a new, perhaps more realistic, equilibrium when you feel the full brunt of the workload on a daily and yearly basis, and when you pay all the bills and feel, directly, the financial consequences of your actions and decisions.
You are very switched on, I'm sure, and will do well.
I wouldn't say enthusiasm is the same as determination. Enthusiasm tends to be new and easily dented. Determination plugs on despite the dents.
