Re: Milk price

22 cents per litre (3.7% fat/3.4% protein) + taxes for us and about 48 cents in the shop for milk with 3.5% fat.

Milk price

about 75 cents a litre in Canada but need it to pay quota. The nice thing is you can figure out everything out ahead of time here as to if you can make it or not cause it's probably the most stable industry in the country and price doesn't fluctuate except go up with inflation

Which should also suggest very strongly that the dairy industry in Canada has nowhere to go but down.

Milk price

my understanding is that the canadian industry is almost all domestic consumption with anyone silly enuf to produce over quota only getting spot price (I believe world market prices which are not sustainible).

By the by our milk buyer told us our new field officer doesnt like coming up north to see us because he is frightened of what he might find!(suicided farmer)and that he was really shook up after his last (first for him) visit to our area.He comes from the western district which hasnt had 6 years of drought or the debt levels incured by it.
my husband said he was pleased that you lot were finally waking up to the fact that there is real pain out here.
we have heard of a young farmer 30ish who has pulled the pin apparently he owes 2.5 mil on 500 cows.we are still waiting with bated breath for an opening price. Im hearing anything from 18cents a litre for a jersey herd in gippsland to 30 cents for a liquid milk contract - neither of which are economically sustainible for a long period of time.It has become widely apparent that any dairy farmer anywhere needs 35 cents to breakeven.

Re: Milk price

Opening price for the new season July 1 is 28 cents averaged over the year, for factory average components. Spring price ,24 cents, the low test herds will be on around 20. They hope to add three 1c step ups through the season. Nobody can make money at these levels, just marking time and hoping things get better. Haven't checked exchange rates lately ,but i would guess the spring price to be around 10 or 11 p or 18 to 20c us. The aussie dollar has gained lately which does not help our co op ,which is about 80% exports.

Re: Milk price

19.54 today, they reckon it's because of the drop in production, so supply and demand MIGHT work?!

Re: Milk price

They really wernt expecting this price at the area council meeting on tuesday past, it was the thoughts of those united men that were there that the Mays auction was going to be the best of the year! Just goes to show noone can predict the market even those in 'the know'!

Re: Milk price

0.5ppl cut from Milklink.

Extremely disappointed, especially being on a liquid contract when Wisemans have announced a slight rise on their liquid price.

Re: Milk price

Fonterra auction is a real loose canon. After two big drops, todays auction bounced back 25%. Currencies no doubt play a big part.

The rising strength of the pound is no doubt bad news for us though.

The only glimmer at the moment is the price of grain coming off the combine. I hear english barley can be bought for late sixties at the field. Southern Irish stores still have stock which they are offloading pretty cheaply. Its high time the speculators got off soya, and fleeced somebody else's granny.

Milk price

Well a perky 2.00 ppl rise today to 21.54 in the auction - at least it`s a start.

Does this mean we could see price rises , albeit perhaps only between 1 and 2p from 1st October?

I know you have to deduct haulage from the auction price ,but milk should be worth a little more this side of the water anyway.
First Milk are paying less than 21p at present , and obviously the cheese market will take ages to feed through any improvement , but the liquid contracts from 1st October should respond , although first they may have to make up the ground lost since March.

Re: Milk price

It may be also something to do with the seasonal decline in production here, which has been much more pronounced this year, and given the weather we've had this summer, and considering that we had two inches of rain on wednesday, showers every day, and two more inches expected over saturday night, I think some cows will either be drying off, or going on to milk on this year's less-than-perky first cut silage.

Looks like this is going to be an unimaginably bumpy sail.

Just take a look at today's fonterra wmp auction at globaldairytrade.com for a shock.

Re: Milk price

Last month was approx + 26% so

100 + 26 = 126 x 124% = nearly 158.

So we are about 57% up in two months - to a price of about £1750 a tonne.
If my conversions are correct.

This compares to a current UK price of £1400 and a 2007 peak of £2500 ?

Can anyone confirm?

Re: Milk price

Can't confirm but have been pondering this all day, wondering how much export refund has been on it, and if the firming up will trigger the sale of EU and American stocks now, preventing further recovery.

Re: Milk price

23.9ppl yesterday. Perhaps a small glimmer of light in the doom and gloom! No doubt the price was bolstered by the weakened pound and the pick-up in commodity prices.

Re: Milk price

It starts to bring us into the bottom end of English price territory, and not before time. Its been a very hungry winter, spring and summer. Milk supplies in the province are well back, as across the UK.

Re: Milk price

To be fair, I think we have been pretty much neck and neck with the other NI companies this spring/summer, when we traditionally have a lower price than them...

Re: Milk price

My head is really spinning with the news from late last week.

The bulk export cream price ha jumped £400 a tonne in a month .It is now only 50 quid less than the all time high of 2007.

The " value " (only in theory I know , but still) of the cream to a processor is UP by 2.24 p per LITRE .

Rather puts Wiseman`s late rise , of 0.3 ppl into perspective!

So what happens now? The cheese market is stagnant whilst butter rockets to £2,700 a tonne .

Only a modest rise in the skim milk powder price now prevents us equalling 2007 peak values.

Even so AMPE has crashed 23 ppl and plenty of contracts are not even paying that.

Can the various buyers really sit on their hands till after New Year?

Surely not.

Re: Milk price

They will be hard to shift for as long as their current contracts last. They are historically very good at holding out.

I do hope a rise is coming, but we don't need the mayhem of the last peak. That only does a lot of harm in the long run.

Also, the rapid burst in prices may not continue as the EU starts to release stock. I think there will be another good Fonterra auction though before that happens. Fischer-Boel has committed to a sensitive release of stocks. Does anyone know what the attitude of the US would be to their stocks?

Honestly, I think it would still be in our favour if the stockpilers were to exert some moderate downward pressure on the market for the time being, so that supply reduction/culling etc would continue for a while longer.

If there is anything worse than a depression, its a depression that doesn't create sustained growth thereafter. No pain, no gain.
