Anyone use this program or similar? Anyone have a PDA. Thinking about getting one but not really heard too many reviews! Help!

I have been running NMRs Interherd Essential on my PC in the house and Pocket Cow Manager on a Pocket PC outside for nearly 2 years now. Since 1997 I have used both NMRs Herdsman and HUKs One-Stop but for the first time I have managed to avoid duplicating records and (virtually) eliminate paper records. My vet runs Interherd Complete and we use this to produce the health reports for farm assurance purposes and to analyse health events and data. We are constantly fine tuning the way Interherd is set up to give us more accurate and useful data. NMR Herd Companion has recently added another dimension to the system.

At the moment I have only 3 complaints about my system (1) Discrepancies can arise between my Interherd data and NMRs central database (missing services, PDs, etc)
(2) There is no easy way of moving data from Interherd Essential to Interherd Complete. After a routine vet visit I input the results into my PC and he has to input them into his. I thought that I would be able to email them to him or hand him a memory stick. (3) When we purchased the software we were under the impression that we could produce the health reports ourselves rather than relying on my vets version.

The PDA allows me instant access to animals entire life history and I would now be completely lost without it.

Wasn't Mark using a system like this with a PDA, I seem to remember his modelling career starting out in an advert in one of the Dairy mags.

That must have been a year or so back, are you still using it Mark?

Ah yes those early modeling days.From hunble beginings........

The system is great and saves a lot of time as well as keeping you informed on the move.
The biggest problem is the practicality of carrying an expensive little computer around with you all day.I have been through two or three PDA's and currently have an Orange one that is combined with a phone.This saves carrying two items around which is a help.However it is broken at the moment so I have neither my PDA or phone!There are various protective casings etc available but they only add to the weight and unhandyness.

Brian, I have the PDA from Uniform. You need to be pretty savvy with computers to use it as it is not particularly user friendly. Also the column for the animal id no. is only wide enough to show 4 digits. You therefore have to assign a "management number" to each live animal or you cannot find it! Not really a problem for the milking cows but a real pain for the youngstock. Also you cannot record new purchases of antibiotics on the PDA and upload it to the PC it has to go the other way. So if you nip to the Vets and pick up some drugs you need to record it on your PC and then download that info to the PDA before you can record the usage via the PDA. I raised this with the Uniform guys but they have done nothing about it.

The database on the PDA is good but I think the practical use of it needs a rethink.

I bought the Uniform-Agri program a couple of months back, it is the only herd management software that transfers data from the Lely robots. I'm very pleased with it so far, does evrything I ask of it, quickly & simply.

It has a PDA module included in it, so you can apparently just add one on. My question, to those that are using a PDA, is it worth getting one? Does it save much time? Are they reliable enough to cope with being in a farmer's pocket (phones never seem to last long here emoticon )?

I have lost one phone in 8 years....on my 3rd PDA in 3 years it's good but DARD paid for mine if i had to buy one each time i wouldn't have it!

I had a PDA/phone for a year. It was a proper nuisance, a real pain in the butt - especially when you sit down. Its a little easier in the winter when you have pockets on you.

It came as a free annual phone renewal with my O2 contract. Right at the end of the year I dropped it and cracked the screen. I just got an ordinary phone the next time in completely the other direction. It does nothing other than make calls and be damp proof.
