Ketocol

Since last June all cows and heifers have been offered 1000ml of Ketocol in 15-20 litres of warm water after calving. Only 1 or 2 have refused it, the vast majority drink it without much hestitation. Once they have drunk this they are then offered as much warm water as they will drink. Some of the mature cows have been drinking 80-90 litres at this point.

We have fed LIFT throughout the transition period for 10 years or so now, but since June we have fed it for 7 days post calving as well in an attempt to stimulate liver function.

Blood ketone levels seem markedly reduced 7-10 days calved, no LDAs and retained placenta restricted to one set of twins (out of 5 sets), one really awkward, prolonged malpresentation and a cow calving 3 weeks early.
