Ordered mine on Tuesday. First winter in years that we have struggled to pick up heats here but enough is enough. Blame certain people on here if it is a waste of money! emoticon

Re: Fabdec/ Semex Heat time

There was an interesting write up on a Scottish dairy farmer in British Dairying magazine last week. He had put the Heat Time system in and was certainly singing it's praises.

Apparently, he has to spend very little time looking at, or even feeding & milking his cows these days. Maybe it's freeing up time for him to spend on Cowtalk? emoticon

I spoke to Fabdec about it the other day. They are offering your money back in 6 months if not pleased with it, so they certainly seem confident. emoticon

Re: Fabdec/ Semex Heat time

Have been using the Heat time since Dec 2007.
70 collars fitted in a 200 cow herd. We think it is doing a super job but as we were one of the first in Ireland to try it we have learned a lot about it! Cost aside these are my thoughts
Cons;
 1 cow equals 1 collar,eurooo`s
Fit collars PROPERLY they need to be firm i.e. unable to rotate when the cows head is up. Do not and I repeat, do not attempt to fit collars in a barrier, chrush only with a second person on the tail, be prepared to get walloped around a bit but it is the only way to put collars on in a "natural stance".
Despite any sales talk to the contary fit readers at the entrance to the parlour standings, not a single one on the exit!
Pros
Where collars fitted properly almost 100% accurate, fact.
Zero heat detection needed by farmer
"Lesser" quality labour needed around the cows as cows only have to be served not checked
Less cows bulling, therefore less chance of injury
No teaser needed, cost plus reason above
No stock bull as above plus safety
Less straws needed as conception rate will improve due to better timing and only serving cows which are bulling!
Massive gains in the genetic potential of the herd due to no stock bull and the confidence to be able to use "better" semen
The ability to pick out sick cows early
Less scanning costs as confidence grows in machine.
If you were to start breeding on a date the machine will tell you which cows need intervention as time goes by.
Simple as a mobile phone(the old ones)

They are my thoughts on the machine, a huge cost but in some farms, to be without it would be akin to having no bulk tank.

Any idea whether they would introduce a text messaging system similar to the Dairymaster one or not?
