Hi there

Just found this site and decided to join

in. My sister and milk around 80 cows.

Dad does the feeding. After years of

purebred holstiens, I am starting to

look at the ayrshires. Anyone outhere with

some input? How are the Holstien/ayrshire

cross?

           Merry Christmas,

I don't know a lot about Ayrshire, but I would suggest to do not cross. If you want buy some pure Ayrshire and breed both race purebred.

Re: Hi there

On the same vein as the previous post, why not try Dairy Shorthorns, either crossed or pedigree.Superb longevity,
         great yields( milk & solids)
feet and legs are no trouble.
Very, very friendly breeders, and a great community! Like the man says, you gotta try!! emoticon

We have had ayrshires and their crossses. good milkers. Quiet cows. (my favourite 'coloured' breed). Just watch milking speed proofs theres a couple of good type bulls that are slow.

Dairy shorthorns also a good cross, they come out as blue roan and also milk well. Work better on the tall, dairy, good uddered cows.

Re: Hi there

Thanks for all the input guys! Most of

the dairies are pretty well Holstiens

around here. That's all I see is black and

white. I will have to try and find

dairies which milk different breeds and

ask them questions. Now the milk board

takes money of the cheque if you have low

butterfat. That's the main reason for changing. Thanks guys.

Hi there

Tell us about your setup, geograpy and location. All of these factors help let us know a little about you. Do you graze? How do you house your cattle? What kind of parlor do you have? What kinds of forage do you have access to?

Hi there

Here it is....

I live in Manitoba Canada. We have a double 8 parallel fast exit parlour. We
have a insultated barn with a straw pack.
There are 4 stations of computer feeders.
Cow are fed barley and top dressing. In summer they go out to pasture. In fall and winter they are fed alfalfa bales or silage.
When I was 18 my parents help me start up with tie stall and my sister too. My parents also had their own barn. 5 years ago we decided to combine the herds and build a parlour. When I had the tie stall I would A.I, now with the parlour I get good breeding bulls. If I forgot something let me know. We have 1600 acres, don't have time to grow grain so we rent out grain land to the neighbours. I bought a chopper from France and shipped it over, so we do
our own silage now. I drive while dad packs
and mom, Isabelle and the neighbour drives the trucks. Gee I am starting to write a book here. Thanks for taking interest..

Re: Hi there

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marrianne9, very limites experience here, but I did buy a group of open heifer to use as receipients - they were large framed and cheap - what I was looking for!LOL - in them were 3 Ayrshire/Holstin crosses (AyrHols to us!) - may be coincidence, but none of the 3 milked worth a darn and milked VERY VERY slow. I sold them about a month fresh - told the buyer they were slow but he was ok with that - he was looking for CHEAP too! Get what you pay for - remember.
As a long-time - and old time Holstein breeder - I think if you breed a Holstein to any other breed, you are losing a lot - just my opinion.
