Hello

Just discovered this great web site. I love dairy cattle of all breeds. I was raised on a registered Holstein farm in Texas. I am about to retire from the US Air Force and would like to get back into the dairy business in some way. I'm also 56 so should know better, but will figure out some way to handle cattle again. My main interest is trying to figure out the genetics of great cattle. Breed the best cow in the world to the best bull and you usually get only fair if it's a breeding bull. Good bull’s much less great bulls are only where you find them. Usually in unlikely places.

Regards,
Johnny Stansell

Re: Hello

Hi Heather;

  It's so good to hear from someone I know. I've so enjoyed your comments on the polled group. This group seems like a pretty good one for breeding. Hearing comments from all over the world has given me a new perspective of what a cow should look like to be profitable. I actually save Gregs writings, I think they are important. I save some of your comments too for future use. Is your family dairy a grazing operation? I'm thinking of an intensive grazing operation of some class of livesock when I retire from the military this summer. Eventually working toward dairy cattle.

Regards,
Johnny Stansell

Hello

Yep we graze. have just shy of 1000 acres. Milking up to 330, currently 230 with cows calving now. We carry all of our young and dry stock ourselves. 140 acres of permanent pasture the rest is getting sown down to shaftal clover with diploid or tetrapliod tetila ryegrass. Starting it with irrigation and praying for rain (with fingers and toes crossed too)! I wrote some stuff in the Welcome (i think thats what it was called) thread.

I have seen some good intensively grazed beef operations (mainly with angus because they get the premium price here).

I save most of Gregs aAa comments to try and understand more.

Oh and Christof visits this forum too.
