posticon Vet Practices

Hello to other cow talkers. I am a farm vet in the south/south west of England. I left general practice to start a per head/litre charging practice (just me though)with no restirction on number of visits or time. I have typically spend 16 hours a week on farm (on two large dairies) and only charge cost (true cost! Not just wholesaler prices)for all medicines. It has brought some great results on farm but attracting clients is difficult. I would like to know if you farmers out there want this sort of vet practice or not. I would be grateful for your comments.

Re: Vet Practices

To FiringOnAllFour:

Thanks for replying!

For the "all in" service including fertility work, fresh cow programme, sick cow checks, on farm mastitis cultures (easy to do, £1 per sample), nutrition monitoring, emergencies etc. etc. about £35-40 per cow per year(youngstock work included at no extra cost) depending on size of farm. Obviously only a big dairy is going to need a vet for 16 hours a week (I have worked on an 850 and a 950 cow dairy so far but it could work for smaller dairies). The agreement is: I will be there when you need me just be sensible on call outs. It can be lower depending on what level of service you require. I want to give excellent vet support to farms but the service and therefore charges are very flexible. What do you think?
