Better late than never...

I have been visiting (and occasionally posting) on Mark's wonderful Cowtalk for 12 months now but have never found time to introduce myself before, so here goes. My name is Michael, I am 43, married for 20 years with a 14 year old son. We farm 250 acres LFA land in SE Cumbria. 75 acres improved pasture, 30 acres spring wheat and rest permanent pasture. Farm carries 85 pedigree Holsteins, 50 herd replacements and varying numbers of my neigbours' sheep.

With the exception of 2 Northern Dairy Shorthorns purchased at a relatives dispersal in the 1930s the herd traces back (as far as I know) to the shorthorns milked by my great great grandfather here in the late 1800s. My father and grandfather turned them into British Friesians in the 1950s (Ullswater, Holmside and Farleton blood mainly) and I have spent the last 15 years changing them into my idea of a North American Holstein.

Rolling Annual Average 8700kg 4.3 3.4

Current Classification

29VG 30GP 11G 2F P2 NC7

Thanks again to Mark for such a wonderful forum.

Years ago when I first became aware of the internet it occurred to me how incredibly useful it would be for a pedigree breeder to be able to share information with breeders all over the world. Thank you Mark and everyone on Cowtalk for making it a reality!

Re: Better late than never...

My source tells me that when you graded the cows up to pedigree that you gave the families Shakespearean names. That was one of the names they remember."Big black cow it was"!!

...big, black cow by Marshside Regal 2 (son of Wolston Black Lad if anyone else can remember him), PLI-£226!! Her first calf was my second BSR, grand daughter by Startmore Supreme was LP50 but between them Shoremar Mason and Fatal killed the family stone dead in late 90s.
