Re: Hey Cowtalkers

Hello and welcome, I am based in Fermanagh, in the wet North.

Impressive production figures, care to give us a bit more info about herd management, breeding history, just general background info ?

I went to Madison with the IHFA last year, organised by the remarkable Kevin Dillon, so looking forward the the convention this year at millstreet time.

Re: Hey Cowtalkers

Hey Alan, thanks. the herd was set up with a British friesian base by my father back in the 60's. they came from NI, i think their prefix was Bunalun. Dutch sires were used on these cows leaving us with our present day herd. Some heifers were imported from Holland in 1994 as well. We mainly concentrate on kgs protein in our sire selection. but more recently we are looking at more type. We've imported a few embryos over the last few years as well. I'm still in school at the moment but i'm in charge of the breeding/fertility.

Cows are fed a tmr all year round, with grazing grass whenever the Irish weather allows us to! Maize, wholecrop wheat and beet along with concentrates are fed.

Yes, i looking forward to the conference next year too, should be good.

Hows the weather up in Fermanagh!!?

Re: Hey Cowtalkers

Weather is wet, even by our standards ! Cows are still housed, at least on 90% of farms.

Up here, we hear that all Cork herds are on the NZ / extensive grazing system loved by Teagasc. Nice to hear someone is doing something different to the recommended system, and making a success of it.

Enjoy cowatlk, usually good for a variety of opinions and points of view.

Re: Hey Cowtalkers

Yes you are not wrong, we are the only people doing this in our area. Most prople follow Teagasc like sheepemoticon . EBI is the key word for them! But at the same time both systems can work equally well, just a point of view really.

What kind of system do you run?

Re: Hey Cowtalkers

I am in the AI business up here. We have our own company selling froma variety of sorces, as well as a private ai stud, holding about 10 bulls at the moment.

Been invloved in the AI business for 20 years, with a variety of companies, but did work with Semex for most of the time.

Currently we have 3 Holstein bulls in the stud, but always looking to add to that number.

Re: Hey Cowtalkers

Ok sounds interesting, what kind of pedigrees are you sampling an the moment?

I'd say you'll be getting the cows out soon if this weather keeps up! emoticon
