Hello from Ohio!

Hello. I am Roseanna. I am from SE Ohio and we have a small Grade A dairy farm. We raise registered Jerseys and Jersey/Norwegian Red crosses that are in the AJCA Expansion/Genetic Recovery Program. The Jersey lines trace back to the first registered Jerseys brought West of the Alleghany Mountains by my relatives in the late 1800s.
We also have a good sized herd of goats. Approximately 80 head of breeding goats.

Re: Hello from Ohio!

The "breeding up" program that the American Jersey Cattle Association offers. We were one of the first herds to utilize the "Expansion" aspect of the program. Our cattle have their complete genetic records on file with AJCA. We feel it is of value to keep a record of those genetics.
The Recovery Program is used when breeding Jersey sires to grade Jersey dams. The Expansion Program is when Jersey sires are used over non-Jersey dams, or in our case, non-Jersey sires used over Jersey dams. The resulting offspring are J1s, and when bred back to Jersey sires, move into the Genetic Recovery Program. There preference is Jersey sires over non-Jersey dams, of course.
We liked the strength in our dam lines but were tired of weak calves at birth. We introduced the Norwegian Red genetics into the herd about 9 years ago. We only ever used one Norwegian Red bull and all the animals in our herd with NR in them go back to him. Bought ten units. Ended up with two heifers, one bull retained for breeding and one bull that was shipped to the sale barn. We still have two units left of that NR bull, though one resides at the bottom of the tank..

Hello from Ohio!

Hello from wet and windy Westmorland, we have just been talking at length about inbreeding, perhaps the Holstein breed needs its own Expansion Program...
