I think they might both be arrestable offences in certain parts of the world emoticon

My name's Funk. I'm 97 and I've never even seen a cow, far less milked one. When I were a lad there was no such thing as milk or beef. We made do with rainwater and tree bark, and it didn't do us any harm!

Get rid of the Beltie and get a Charollais, much easier lambing and you actually get a decent weight of carcass for your efforts.

As long as I'm getting top price in market for my lambs I'm sticking with what's working!! I find the beltex really easy lambing anyway, quick to suckle, quick to finish; got rid of the charollais last year cos the lambs didn't have the will to live that the beltex have!!

Charollais!!!!!! Ha!!!! Soft little buggers aint they, you'd have to get them all plastic macks!!!! I think Texel is the breed for you Mary Moo, the extra couple of ribs they have compared to the Beltex is a huge bonus!!!!

Well, I cant really disagree with you there! most of my ewes are big long texel crosses, add that to the beltex (the biggest rams we can breed) and you get the size AND the shape!!

Re: Calling all lurkers, gatecrashers n other oddbods...

Mckeague, my "soft" (pedigree) Charollais lambs have been going out at 24 hours old for the last week, the warmest DAY we've had is 4 degrees and obviously much colder at night. Haven't lost any yet!

We have, over the years, run many different breeds of sheep in the crossbred flock. At one time we had Suffolk, Texel, Charollais and Cambridge cross lambs all running side by side. We saw no difference in losses between any of the breeds once out, despite all having to go out at 24 hours whatever the weather (cattle take priority over shed space). We have however seen major differences between breeds on lambing problems, lambs born dead, time to 1st suckle, ease of management and carcass weight!

Take a chill pill Charryman, there is a place for every breed if used correctly. By the by our texels have been going out at about the same time as your Charollais so no problems there either. Just done the weeks lambing 47 out of 50 lambed to fresh semen AI with 14 from 22 holding to the frozen, i'm guessing this is a pretty good hit rate.

Have you had problems lambing Suffolks?? mine seem to have really narrow pelvis bones so if theres a leg or head back its really hard to get them out, even with my tiny hands. I never seem to have this problem with the texels and the mules just get on with it themselves usually. Also, Charryman what differences have you found between breeds, I have only been farming for 4 years so am still learning.....

I scratched you from my list of possible lifelines long time ago emoticon
did you just come out of hibernation?
perhaps you're some kind of guru that needed the time to meditate to find the answer? emoticon
