Re: Welcome!
I am not a current farmer unlike many here. I grew up on a dairy so I do know something about it.
My father leased a herd in Idaho in 1974 when I was only 7. He eventually moved up and leased a larger farm and he bought his cows that time. That was in 1975. We had a carousel parlor that at the time was a real new thing. I remember that he hated it though. It was a mechanical nightmare. We then moved to Washington and started a farm with 300 head of fresh cattle on a 100 acre set up.
I spent my life on a dairy farm with yearly 4-H activities from age 7 to 14.
The family business didn't survive but I got milking jobs at the age of 18 (in Michigan) and 20(in Idaho again).
When I was 11 I participated in dairy judging and made the County team. We placed 4th in the state that year and the next year we took 2nd for team and I placed 2nd individually(when I was 12).
I loved judging and observing pedigrees(I am also an avid horse pedigree fanatic for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses as well).
I went out in style!! My cows won Grand Champion, Res. Grand Champion, Res. Jr. Champion, Dam and Daughter, Grand Champion 4-H and FFA.
Oh, and I also won the Fitting and Showing championship.
What a year!!
Anyways, my champion cow was a Registered Holstein named Venida Startrek Elaine(Skagvale Startrek x Venida Lothario Joannie by Fairhill Lenas Lothario(a son of Bootmaker))She classified VG 85 as a dry 3yo.
It was so long ago...I wish I could remember her lactation totals. Her first lactation wasn't very good(she did suffer an illness that year) but her second lactation she was producing 120+ Lbs a day at 3.6 butterfat. Back then, they didn't test for protein.
I lost track of my cows after we sold them.
It was a sad day for all.
I dearly miss working with cows. I have done it all.
Calved, Artificially Insemenated, groomed for shows(including clipping), halter broke, milked, treated mastitis, etc.
I even taught a 4-H club how to dairy judge.
