Calamity

Now rearing five orphaned day old pups. Bull Mastiff type dam produced four healthy pups Sunday night, all well through Monday. Heard weird sounds coming from her box yesterday evening. Found her standing on the verandah retching. One new live puppy and one dead one. Mother appeared to be having trouble breathing and collapsed in front of me. I stuck my hand down her throat as far as it could go(her tongue was blue)but could find no blockage. I thumped her chest to no avail.

I managed to express a small amount of colustrum from her post mortem and fed the puppies that. Fortunately four of them had at least twelve ours to suckle.

They have survived the first night and are now on a recipe I got off the net. Wiping their backsides after feeding is a treat.

Any tips?

I have no handy tip for you, but I will keep my fingers crossed and wish you good luck nursing the little pups.

All well, eating solid food and growing fast, first one goes off to its new home next weekend. Easy as pie to get rid of pups that are going to grow big and loud with the current crime wave gripping the country. I am keeping a female.

Re: …

yeah, them Mastiffs sure have the size and the bark to remind you of your mortality,
reason I know is our neighbor has one and every now and again I get to hear his blood curdling bark, yikes. I mean, I'm not easily scared by any means but that thing could probably down me in two or three gulps emoticon

well done on your part. maybe I wasn't too far of when I first thought your nick came from "smoushond"
